LYLE ECKHARDT TAKEN SUDDENLY The death of Mrs. Lyle Eckhardt, of Iowa City, which occurred at Mercy hospital in Iowa City at 6 p.m. Friday, December 1, came as a great shock to her many relatives and friends. She underwent an operation early Thursday morning which, though it seemed at first to be successful, finally proved to be too much of a shock to her heart. Mrs. Eckhardt was born about nine miles northwest of Wellman where she grew to young womanhood and endeared herself to a host of relatives and friends by her kind disposition and generous heart. In 1919 she moved to Wellman with her parents and lived here until 1923. She attended the Wellman high school when health permitted and was active in various church activities and social functions while a resident here. In the fall of 1923 she went with her parents to Iowa City. There she passed the remainder of her life. She was graduated from University high school in 1926, and then attended the University of Iowa. She completed two years of work in this institution while taking charge of the home after the death of her mother December 10, 1926, and taking the role of mother, as well as daughter and sister. Here, too, she was an active participant in social and church being a member of Phi Kappa Methodist sorority, and other similar organizations. On December 11, 1928 she was united in marriage to Lyle G. Eckhardt, and moved to their home in Coralville Heights, Iowa City. Here she lived happily until her death. As always thoughtful of the welfare and happiness of all, and she was interested in her club work in the Coralville Heights club, to which she gave freely of her talents in order to foster social life and improvement. The services held at Champion Hill at two o'clock Sunday were conducted by Rev. R. W. Meeker of the Pleasant Hill Methodist church. The following obituary was read: Rachel Ellen McDowell Eckhardt, daughter of Sarah Eveline Huffman and James Henry McDowell, was born in Iowa county, Iowa, near Champion Hill June 12, 1899 and departed this life at Mercy hospital in Iowa City December 1, 1933, aged 34 years, 5 months and 19 days. She was a member of the Methodist church and a very helpful friend and neighbor to all. She leaves to mourn her untimely departure, her husband, Lyle Eckhardt, and an infant daughter, Phyllis Elizabeth, who will never know the love of her mother; also her father, J. H. McDowell, who resides near Champion Hill, three brothers, Oren, Irvin and Dallas, also of this community, and two sisters, Mrs. Zella Marine of this vicinity and Mrs. Hope Hudson, of North English, and ten nephews and seven nieces, also her husband's parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Eckhardt, who will care for the little daughter. Besides the above named there is a large number of relatives and friends who will greatly miss her. Her mother preceded her in death December 10, 1926. A quartet composed of Mrs. Clarence Humphrey, Mrs. Mary Wade, Mrs. George Berry and Mrs. Howard Berry, accompanied by Mrs. Ed Roberts, sang the following selections at the service: The Old Rugged Cross, Beautiful Isle of Somewhere, and Abide With Me. Burial was made in the champion Hill cemetery and the pall bearers were N. E. Wahl, H. B. Rugg, Irving Shames, John Zillmer, Dave Marine, and Stanley Hukill.
