Description	:	Rachel Frain was born in Limerick twp., Montgomery Co., PA on September 24, 1820, the daughter of George Frain and Mary (Painter) Frain. She moved with the family to New York and then to Cedar County, Iowa where she met and married her husband John Strouse on December 9, 1841. They had one daughter, Mary Elizabeth Strouse in 1842 and the family continued to reside in Cedar County until 1852 when in the spring of that year they headed west on the Oregon Trail. Read More	Rachel Frain was born in Limerick twp., Montgomery Co., PA on September 24, 1820, the daughter of George Frain and Mary (Painter) Frain. She moved with the family to New York and then to Cedar County, Iowa where she met and married her husband John Strouse on December 9, 1841. They had one daughter, Mary Elizabeth Strouse in 1842 and the family continued to reside in Cedar County until 1852 when in the spring of that year they headed west on the Oregon Trail. They began their trip with six yoke of oxen, two cows and two wagons, and were well prepared for the journey. But then John contracted cholera and died on the plains on June 19, 1852 leaving his wife and daughter to fend for themselves. Rachel too became deathly ill from cholera and could no longer drive a wagon. She was forced to sell one ox team and a wagon. Her daughter drove the remaining wagon while she lay in the back with sickness. Eventually a man offered to help them get to Oregon if Rachel would promise to marry him. They may have married at one of the Forts along the way, but it isn't known for sure. This Mr. Black abruptly abandoned the women once they got to Oregon. Rachel was able to find employment first in Washougel and then in Vancouver, Washington. She met H. William Goldbeck while in Vancouver, and they were married on February 5, 1855 in Fourth Plain, Clark Co., WA. Four children were born to that marriage; John Henry, Charlotte, Henrietta, and Agnes Augusta.
