Her life was indeed a link binding the present to the past. Her grandfather owned the land on which the Battle of Brandywine, September 11,1777, and was killed in that memorable battle. Her mother died when she was but 18 months old and she was taken to the home of Daniel Miller in Culpepper County, Virginia. Mrs. Miller, being her mother's sister, took the motherless niece not only to her home but to her heart and became indeed a mother to her and when at about the age of 12, the Millers with several other families, among the number being the Davis family of which her future husband was a member, came to Ohio. Daniel Miller settled on a farm about 3 miles west of Rainsboro. There the deceased grew to womanhood and married to Asahel H. Davis, March 16, 1842. To them were born eight children, Mary L. Joseph P., Lewis B., William B., Thomas H., Sarah J., James B., and Jacob H.She lived to see half of her children, with husband, called to the home beyond. One daughter, Mrs. Mary L. Seal of Oregon, three sons, Lewis B. of Lincoln, Illinois, James B. of Rainsboro, and James B. of Rainsboro, Jacob H. of Villisca, Iowa, are left to mourn the loss of a dear mother; beside these there are ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Her husband died March 22, 1905. Since then she has remained at the old home tenderly cared for by her son, James and his wife. Hers was a beautiful life; strength and gentleness were manifested therein. The Palmist says, "Thy gentleness hath made me great." She met the duties and trial of life with a patient forbearance and gentle ministration of kindness, that will live long in the memory of loved ones. The home was to her the dearest spot and here she ruled more by gentleness and persuasion than by command and bound her loved ones to her by ties that death cannot sever, and as Solomon in describing the noble woman in the Book of Proverbs, "The heart of her husband safely trusted in her, and her children rise up to call her blessed." Sorrows came to her as the common lot of all. She has seen eleven of her loved ones, three sons, one daughter, husband, five grandchildren and one great-grandchild, borne to their last resting place, yet no murmur of discontent escaped her lips and I think it may be safely said that no harsh or unkind word was ever spoken by her in regard to anyone. All, who have ever been inmates of the home or as neighbors and friends were intimately associated with her were drawn toward her by her sweetness of disposition and gentleness of manner. As has been said by another so it may truthfully be said of her, "none knew her but to love her." She enjoyed the presence and companionship of her friends and some here will recall with what keen delight she welcomed the kindred neighbors and friends who gathered in the old home to celebrate her 88th birthday. Little did we think that so soon we should look for the last time upon her gentle face, calm in its repose of the last sleep. She was a member of the U. B. Church and in the many years of her Christian life she ever manifested the Spirit of Christ in word and deed. On January 8, she took to her bed with what proved to be her last sickness and in one short week death claimed her for his own and while our hearts are sad because of this our loss, we think of her eternal gain and through the mist of tears we look not at the things are seen but at the things that are not seen. We see the morning of God's tomorrow and with the morn "those angel faces smile that we have loved long since and lost awhile." "A few who watched her sail away, Do miss her craft from the busy bay, Some friendly barks that were anchored near Some loving soul that her heart held dear In silent sorrow still drop a tear, But she peacefully furled her ready sail In mooring shelter from storm and gale, And greeted the friends who had sailed before O're the unknown sea to the unseen shore."
