She had not been well since a fall several months ago, at which time she sustained a fractured hip, but her death was unexpected. Mrs. Cook, who was born in Lafayette, Indiana, on February 8, 1854, came to Greenwood County in 1884, and this since had been her home. Her husband, Alfred A. Cook preceded her in death in 1913. Surviving her in her immediate family are five children; Bessie F. Cook, Sarah O. Cook, Halsey H. Cook, all of Eureka, Elwood E. Cook of Whiting, Kansas, and Jesse A. Cook of St. Louis, Missouri. A double funeral service for Mrs. Cook and her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Halsey H. Cook, of Eureka, who died the same day, will be held from the Baird Funeral Home at 2:00 o'clock this afternoon, Thursday, January 8. Rev. S. Duane Ogden of the Congregational Church, and Rev. Phillip D. Norvell of the Methodist Church will conduct the service. Interment will be in the Greenwood Cemetery. From Eureka Herald 8 January 1942 page 1. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Rachel Olive Singley, daughter of Jamea and Christine Hoffman Singley, was born February 8, 1854, near Lafayette, Indiana, and passed away January 5, 1942, at her home in Eureka, in her eighty-eighty year. When she was a small child her family moved to Winterset, Iowa, from where they moved to Ottawa, Kansas, About a years after coming to Ottawa she united with the Methodist Church at the age of seventeen. She was a faithful member thoughtout the remainder of her long life. She was married ro Alfred A. Cook, August 10, 1876, at Ottawa, and they made their home near there until 1885. when they moved to Greenwood County, Kansas, where they lived on a farm ten miles north of Eureka. Mr. Cook aied on August 10, 1913, on the thirty-seventh anniversary of their marriage. Sometime after the death of her husband, Mrs. Cook came to Eureka, in 1918, where she lived until her passing. Mr. and Mrs. Cook were the parents of seven children, two of who died in iinfancy. Thses surviving are: Halsey H. Cook, living on the home farm; Elwood E. Cook, Wichita, Kansas; Jesse A. Cook, St. Louis, Mo.; Sara O. Cook and Bessie F. Cook, at home. A sister, Mrs. R.W. Service, Chetopa, Kansas, also survices. There are nine grandchildren. Rachel Cook was consistent Christian, always concered for her church. She was a fine pwesonality, of sunny disposition, even tempered, poised and possessing a lively sense of humor. She was a faithful wife and a good mother, spending herself unstintingly for her family. She retained her inflagging interest in life to the last and her keen mind was always alert to current happendings and friends. Mentally she lived on tip toe to the end. Funeral service conducted by Rev. S. Duance Ogden and Rev. Phillip D. Norvell, was held from the Baird Funeral Home in Eureka, Thursday, January 8, at 2:00 p.m. Interment was in the Greenwood Cemetery. From Eureka Herald 15 January 1942 apge 3.
