Rachel "Berneice" Kroll was born October 4, 1922, in Anthon and attended Anthon Public School. She married Kermit Zahnley February 21, 1939, in Ida Grove, Iowa. The couple made their home in the Correctionville and Anthon communities. She operated a nursing home in Correctionville from 1953-1956. They moved to South San Francisco, California, in 1956 where she worked at the International Motel. In 1959 they returned to the Anthon and Correctionville area. Mr. Zahnley died March 2, 1966. She married Edward Kroll August 19, 1969, and moved to Correctionville in 1974. In July 1985 she entered Maple Heights Nursing Home. Survivors include three sons, Wayne, Gene and Randy Zahnley, all of Correctionville, one stepdaughter, Mrs. James (Sandra) Cheever of Sioux City, three sisters, Dorothy Smith and Mrs. Wilfred (Betty) Berning, both of Mapleton, and Mrs. Abby (Mary) Abbott of Mountain View, California, a brother, Charles Downing of Anthon, eleven grandchildren and a great grandson. She was preceded by her parents, husbands and one sister.
