Ragnar Slaaen was born July 24, 1911, to homestead parents Peter and Anna (Kantrud) Slaaen in Fredrick Township, Divide County, N.D. He was raised on the family farm and educated in a rural setting. His father died when he was a young boy, so Ragnar learned to do a man’s day worth of work at a very early age. Ragnar started farming and tending the farm animals for the neighbors when he was 10 years old. Farming first with a team of horses and later learning the conveniences of tractors to cultivate the soil. He enjoyed the farming way of life and was always very particular about that ways things should be cared for. He was strong in his character and there was never a doubt about where he stood on an issue. On Nov. 23, 1934, Ragnar was united in marriage to Dagmar Winge at Grenora, N.D. The couple made their home on a farm north of Grenora where they raised small grains and cattle. To this union four children were born. He retired in 1973 and they moved into Grenora leaving the farming to his sons, Robert and Dennis. Dagmar died a resident of the Bethel Lutheran Nursing Home in Williston on Jan. 19, 2001. Ragnar was a great ambassador for Grenora. He was an avid sports fan, and was always known to be young at heart. He loved to visit with anyone and you always left with a smile from one of his many stories shared. He was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Grenora, and also the Grenora Farmers Union. Ragnar is survived by his sons, Robert (Marlaine) Slaaen of Dickinson, N.D., Dennis (Pat) Slaaen of Grenora, N.D.; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; sisters Palma (Kenneth) Heckman of Minot, N.D., Thora (Sam) Bloom of Crosby, N.D.; Tillie (Calmer) Overlee of Battleview, N.D., Maghnild (Dan) Gallagher of Anacortes, Wash. and sister-in-law, Mae Magnus, of Phoenix, Ariz. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dagmar; his parents, Peter and Anna; infant son, James and infant daughter, Ruth, brothers, Iver Slaaen, Paul Slaaen, Torger Slaaen, and, Timon, Albert, Martin, Olaf and Christian Heide.
