Her devoted husband of 39 years, Calmer, was at her side. Tillie is at rest. At last. "Takk for alt." Tillie was born on February 13, 1926 near Alkabo, ND. She shared a birthday with her mother, Anne Kantrud Slaaen Heide. Her father was Fredrik Heide. Both had emigrated from Skåbu, Norway in the Gudbrandsdal area. Tillie attended a little white one-room schoolhouse, Daneville #5, which she later returned to as a teacher. She also attended Forward #2, then high schools in Grenora, Crosby, and Fargo. She taught school at Westby, Columbus, Garrison, and near Cole Harbor. It was here that her first husband of 16 years, Henry "Hank" Yahn, was killed in a coal mining accident in 1962. Tillie and Calmer were married in 1971 and she became a farm wife. She was a hard worker and especially liked their cattle. Tillie was very proud of her Norwegian heritage and went to Norway at least ten times. In 1954 she went on her first trip to Norway with her father. He bought her a very beautiful and unique red bunad with gold embroidery. This bunad has been modeled several times at the annual Høstfest in Minot. Tillie was a very active member of the communities where she lived. For 48 years she was president of the Nordvestre Gudbrandsdal lag – an annual gathering, or "lag," that drew together people who originated from the Northwest Gudbrands valley in Norway. For 10 years she was president of the North Dakota chapter of "WIFE," Women Involved in Farm Economics. For 2 years she was president of the VFW Auxiliary and then for 2 years was district president. She was president of the Senior Citizens' Club in Powers Lake. She was one of the first directors of the Høstfest in Minot and presented a wreath of wheat to Princess Astrid of Norway. She also was a first aid instructor with the Red Cross. When President Dwight Eisenhower was in North Dakota for the dedication of the Garrison Dam, Tillie bandaged his finger for him. Tillie was part of a "blended family" before they called them that. Her father, Fredrik Heide, had 4 sons (Kristian, Albert, Martin and Olaf) with his first wife before she passed away from tuberculosis. Her mother, Anne Kantrud Slaaen, had 6 children (Iver, twins Torger and Paul, Ragnar, Palma and Thora) with her first husband before he passed away from TB. So there was "his family," "her family," and then "their family." Tillie was in this third group of children along with her older sister, Magnhild Heide Gallagher and younger brother Timon Heide. All are deceased except much-loved "aunties" 94 year old Thora Slaaen Bloom of Crosby and 87 year old Magnhild "Muggy" "Sue" Heide Gallagher of Anacortes, Washington.
