When a small child his parents moved to Marshalltown, Iowa, where his father died. Read More	Boone County Democrat December 15, 1911 Ralph Fitz was born in Adamsville, Muskingum county, Ohio, October 9th, 1877, making him 34 years, 1 month and 26 days old at the time of his death. When a small child his parents moved to Marshalltown, Iowa, where his father died. Soon after the family came to Boone county, where he lived until eight years ago when he went to Durango, Colorado, and engaged in railroad work on the Denver & Rio Grande road. He lived there two years and then went to Pueblo, Colorado. He was a fireman at the time of his death, just ready to be promoted to engineer. He was a member of the Royal Gorge No. 52 Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen of Pueblo, and also belonged to the Knights of Pythias, No 52 at Pueblo. He came to his death on the passenger train No. 5 on the Denver & Rio Grande, west bound about 5 p.m. December 4th near Swissvale, Colorado, on account of a land slide which caused a wreck. The engine went into the river and cars against the mountains. His body was found under the baggage car. He was picked up and started for the hospital but died on the way. The remains were taken to Pueblo and prepared for burial, then brought to Boone accompanied by W.P. Fitzgerald, representative of Royal Gorge, No. 59, Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen, and also by Grant Osborn, representative of No. 52, Knights of Pythias of Pueblo. He is survived by his mother, foster father, one sister and five brothers. The funeral was held from his mother’s home, Mrs. Warren Wilcox north of town, Sunday afternoon, December 10th, at 2:00 o’clock conducted by the Rev. Golden. The hymns used, “Happy Day”, “We are Going Down the Valley One by One,” “Is My Name Written There” were favorites of the deceased and were tendered by a male quartette composed of Emil Nelson, Ray Keigley, Frank Westerberg and Howard Stout. The pallbearers were Grant Osborne, W.T. Fitzgerald, Pueblo, Colorado; G.O. Dubois, Leo Rogers, A.L. Hutchinson and Guy Brown. Interment was made in the family lot in Bass Point cemetery. ****** The Waterloo Reporter Friday, December 8, 1911 page 11 IOWAN KILLED AT PUEBLO Boone, Dec. 8 - Word has been received in this city of the death of Ralph C. Fitz, a former Boone man, at Pelblo (sic), Colo., in a railroad accident. He had been a fireman on the Rio Grande railroad for eight years. Mr. Fitz was 35 years old and unmarried. His mother, Mrs. Armanda (sic) J. Wilcox, resides just north of the city, and the body will be brought back for interment.
