Son of Orville Clay Boyce and Maude Marie Gunter OBITUARY THE CHARITON LEADER Chariton, Iowa Tuesday, April 14, 1998 BOYCE Ralph Clifford Boyce, son of Orville Clay and Maude Marie Gunter Boyce, was born Dec. 10, 1922, in Leon, Iowa. He was the youngest of three children. Ralph died April 2, 1998, at the Wayne County Hospital in Corydon at the age of 75 years. Ralph graduated from Leon High School in 1940. He farmed with his parents until January 1943 when he entered the Army. He belonged to the First Convalescent Hospital Unit which served on Leyte in the Philippine Islands. He worked as an ambulance driver and water point technician. He was famous among his peers for his extreme neatness and shiny shoes. He was honorably discharged in January 1946. On Sept. 26, 1946 Ralph was married to Dorothy Marie Anderson. To this union three children were born, James Franklin, Carol Maureen and Kathy Lynn. He was baptized into the membership of Eden Baptist Church in 1964. Ralph and Dorothy farmed in Decatur, Lucas and Wayne counties, settling at their present home near Humeston in 1958. In addition to farming, Ralph worked at Yorkshire, Inc., in Humeston from 1966 through 1975. His lifelong love of hunting and target shooting led him to start his own gun repair and reloading business in the late 60's. The Boyce Gun Shop remained a major source of pleasure and satisfaction until his final illness. Ralph was widely known for his craftsmanship and expertise in all areas related to firearms. He had many friends through this interest, both at home and in Arizona. For the past 18 years Ralph and Dorothy spent their winters in Ajo, Ariz. They enjoyed the serenity of the desert and the comraderie of his friends at the rifle range. Ralph was a longtime member of the Alva F. Eaton American Legion Post No. 306 of Humeston. He was currently the commander, a post he had held previously. Ralph was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He taught his children by quiet, gently example, using kindness, humor, honesty, forgiveness and generosity. He had a way of making the grandchildren feel that they were each the most important people in the world. Ralph's favorite place, wherever he was, was with Dorothy. He was preceded in death his parents, brother Charles, sister Mary Cleveland and her husband, George, and father and mother-in-law, John O. and Effie Gilbert Anderson. He is survived by Dorothy, his wife of 51 years; son, Jim Boyce and wife, Leola of Osceola; daughters, Carol Leichsenning and husband, Dale of Altoona, and Kathy Sullivan and husband, Jerry of Humeston; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Pearl Boyce of Leon and other relatives and many friends. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. April 6, 1998, at the Slade-O'Donnell Funeral Home in Leon with the Rev. Max Haggard officiating. Burial was in the Humeston Cemetery with military honors given by Alva F. Eaton American Legion Post No. 306 of Humeston.
