Although the event isn't until July 27th, the family was celebrating the affair since it was one of the few times that many family members could be present. Ralph was born in Lamoni (4th house south of the Coliseum) in I 1893. His father worked for Joseph Smith at the Herald House before eventually building a restaurant in downtown Lamoni (present Radio Shack). He attended Lamoni Schools until the 9th grade when he quit school to go to work in Kansas City to help his family through hard times. He joined the army and fought in France during World War I, where he met his eventual wife, Fernande. When she and her mother came to the United States after the war he renewed his acquaintance with her. "I finally got up nerve and went to Indianapolis and asked her to come cook for me." Following their marriage and a trip to Minnesota by Model T, they set up house in Lamoni. "We raised all our lads here at the same place and we had a lot of wonderful times." Following his return to Lamoni, Ralph and Paul Roberts went into the service station and garage business where they maintained one of the longest operating businesses in Lamoni, Silver and Roberts. Up until about two years ago Ralph still drove himself around, but he has relinquished that responsibility to Jacque and other members of the family. When asked about how many grand, great, and great-great-grandchildren he had he replied, "I'm not really sure only that it's really a bunch." Ralph still maintains an active life, as attributed to the fact that he signed up for a "lifetime" membership when Lamoni opened its VWF post two years ago. Considering his age, Ralph is in great shape especially when you consider that he was driving past his 98th birthday. Probably the thing that brings more chuckles about Ralph was when he signed up for a lifetime membership at the VFW. Now folks, that is truly an optimistic attitude! Ralph and his family already left a legacy in this community and in the state for that matter. Don't forget it's Ralph's father's Cadillac that is a mainstay attraction at the Iowa historic center. Although Ralph is unsure of his total number of children, grand, great-grand kids, etc., it is for certain they are definitely ones that Lamoni can point with pride. RALPH SILVER FAMILY CELEBRATES HIS 100TH BIRTHDAY Ralph's 5 children and their spouses, 17 grandchildren and their spouses, 25 of the great-grandchildren, and 20 friends and in-laws gathered for a potluck dinner on Sunday, July 25 (4 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren were unable to attend). Pictures were taken group-by-group after dinner with Ralph in each one, of course. Then the party was moved to Nine Eagles Lake for swimming and canoeing while Ralph was taking his afternoon nap. Friend Kevin Omstead had brought his wooden canoe, very similar to the one Ralph and his friends had made when they were young - the one he and Earl Traxler had taken on the river to St. Louis. The plan was that Kevin would paddle Ralph around a bit, but when Ralph arrived at suppertime he had a different idea. Ralph did the paddling.
