Raphael Kinney Kin Shreffler passed away very suddenly near his home in Clay county about 12 o'clock Monday night, March 26, aged 65 years, 6 months and 21 days. He had been working all day at the home of his sons, and in the evening had started to return to his own home. Sudden sickness must have stricken him in the early part of the night, as his son went to his fathers' home about 11:30 p.m., and not finding his father in bed, started to search the place for him. Not finding him around the home he then started over to the neighbor's and as he drove into the yard, he found the body of his father lying in the driveway. It is supposed that Mr. Shreffler had started to his neighbor's for help, and that death overtook him on the way. As he had never complained to any of his children about feeling bad, his unexpected and sudden death was a severe shock to the family and friends. Raphael K. Shreffler was the son of Edmund and Mary Shreffler. He was born in Peoria county, Illinois, September 5, 1858. When he was about thirteen years of age he moved with his parents to Fillmore county, Nebraska, where they took up a homestead and there he experienced the hardships of the early pioneers of Nebraska. The deceased resided in Fillmore county up to eighteen years ago, when he went to Clay county to farm. A short time later he bought a farm in Nuckolls county, and by hard work and many sacrifices, improved his place until today it is one of the best equipped farms in that county. The deceased leaves to mourn his death, his aged mother Mary Shreffler, his wife and five children, Mrs. H.B. Campbell, Mrs. W.A. Stoldorf, Lloyd R., Bernice C., and Creston C. Shreffler, and three sisters, Sadie Coburn, Lydia Deal, and Minnie Shreffler, besides other relatives and friends. A short service was held at the home Thursday, March 29, at 10 a.m., and the body was brought to Geneva, where the funeral service was held at 2 p.m. in the Methodist church and was conducted by Rev. R.H. Thompson. The body was laid to rest in the Geneva cemetery. Nebraska Signal April 5, 1923, front page.
