Description	:	Ray Atwood Matheson 88, passed away Saturday, June 2, 2007. He was born on Stemilt Hill January 5, 1919, to Christopher and Adelaide Mathison. Ray was the oldest of four children and grew up tending stock and working in cherry orchards. Ray went to both grade school and high school in Wenatchee. Read More	Ray Atwood Matheson 88, passed away Saturday, June 2, 2007. He was born on Stemilt Hill January 5, 1919, to Christopher and Adelaide Mathison. Ray was the oldest of four children and grew up tending stock and working in cherry orchards. Ray went to both grade school and high school in Wenatchee. Ray married Gale McCann and had two children; Christopher W. Mathison of Las Vegas, NV and Rebeca Brooke of Longview, WA. In 1943, at the age of 24, Ray was diagnosed with Polio, he spent close to a year in Seattle's Swedish Hospital where a new therapy restored the use of his paralyzed legs. Ray studied engineering, accounting and religion at Whitworth College in Spokane. In 1950, Ray married Jane Ellen Lontz, and fathered three children, Anna Christine, David C. and Walter S. Mathison. Ray went to work for the federal government in Quincy as an engineering auditor on the Federal Bureau of Reclamation Columbia Basin Irrigation Project, which delivered irrigation water to over 500,000 acres of farm land. Ray moved on to work for the Washington State Department of Transportation as an engineering auditor for the State Highway Department. Ray assisted in the building of many roads and bridges throughout Central Washington to the Canadian border. Ray retired from the DOT in 1984. He spent his evenings working on the family orchard, he developed the accounting procedures for Stemilt Growers; where he also developed a unique cherry packing system that charged by the minute of line time, allowing cherry growers with large clean fruit that could be ran fast by occupying a shorter line time, a reduced cost per pound which rewarded and encouraged growers to raise large clean cherries. Ray was preceded in death by his father; mother; and two sisters, Helen Mrachek and Mary Wolf; as well as a daughter, Anna Christine. He is survived by his wife, Jane Mathison of Wenatchee; his son, Christopher; daughter, Rebeca Brooke; her daughters, Precilla and Stepheny Medows; her two sons, Foster and McKenzy Medows; son, David and wife, Pamela; their sons, Curtis and Noel Mathison; and daughter, Leah and husband, Freddy Soto; and their children, Eli and Maya. A Memorial Service will be held at Telford's Chapel of the Valley Friday, June 8, 2007, at 2:00 p.m., with a reception following at 229 Turtle Rock Road. Telford's Chapel of the Valley is in charge of arrangements.
