Read More	Thomas Kyle Mathison, 82, of Stemilt Hill, passed away Friday afternoon, December 26, 2008, in the presence of family, after a courageous battle with cancer. Tom was born June 23, 1926, to Christopher and Adelaide Sherwood Mathison at the family home, along with his twin sister, Helen. He joined his older siblings, Ray and Mary (a third sister, Margaret, died as an infant two years before Tom's arrival). Tom's early schooling included Stemilt Hill Elementary School, South Wenatchee School, where he proudly served as chief patrol boy, J. B. Ellison Junior High School and Wenatchee High School, where he played football on the undefeated high school team. In 1944, Tom joined the U.S. Army and fought in the Pacific Theater. He was in Tokyo Bay for the signing of the armistice when the War ended. Promoted to 1st Staff Sergeant, he was responsible for providing safe drinking water to U.S. troops and the citizens of Tokyo. After the War, he returned to the family farm. His life was marked by tragedy in 1947, when he and his father were swept into a collapsed reservoir dam while trying to make repairs. Though Tom escaped, his father was killed. From that time on, he assisted his mother and brother in running the family farm, working many long hours. In 1950, he married his loving wife of 58 years, France Lorraine Goldy. They had three children and worked hard to build their home, starting with just a small structure and adding on as needed to house the growing family. In 1964, Tom started Stemilt Growers, with a mission to create long-term financial return to the land. Today, Stemilt is known globally for packing and marketing world-famous tree fruit. Tom will be long remembered for his contributions to the community, not only as a major employer, but in his charity to schools, worthy events and those in need. Tom gave his heart and soul to the tree fruit industry and will always be remembered for the innovations that thrust the industry into the global reach that it thrives in today. Tom traveled the world to open up markets that had not been reached before. For example, through industry delegations, he played a big role in bringing Washington fruit into Japan and China, and forging trade negotiations with Mexico. Tom was one of the founding members of the Washington State Tree Fruit Research Commission, held positions on the Washington Apple Commission, Northwest Fruit Exporters and many other industry groups. Tom received numerous awards during his career, including Cherry King in 1971, the Silver Apple Award in 1991, Apple Man of the Year in 1996, and Good Fruit Grower of the Year in 2002. He met with U.S. Presidents, state Governors and many foreign ambassadors, to represent the tree fruit industry and its dynamics. In the field, Tom had a passion for quality fruit and always strove to be a steward to the land. He was a leader in organic and sustainable farming. In 1990, Tom began the forward-thinking Responsible Choice® Program that reduced the use of chemicals and pesticides. Tom's philosophy helped Stemilt become a leader in organic farming, with an emphasis on nutrient-balanced trees and soil. Tom believed in building relationships with his customers and would personally visit each of them on a regular basis, crossing the globe, to meet eye-to-eye, to listen and to ensure that his products were top quality. His goal was to build partnerships, both with his customers and with his associates. His down-to-earth style, his unswerving work ethic and his drive were legendary. Tom was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Wenatchee and enjoyed attending church with his children and extended family. His steadfast faith in Jesus was strong. He served on the church's building team and was instrumental in helping to accomplish the move to the new building on Miller and Crawford. Rather than speak about his faith, he quietly expressed it through his actions. Tom is survived by his wife, Lorraine; son, Robert (Cleta) Mathison; son, Kyle (Jan) Mathison; and daughter, Lavonne (Hans) van Someren Greve, all of Wenatchee; seven grandchildren, Aaron, Joyce, West, Tate, Susan, Lillian and Stephen; and six great-grandchildren, Adelaide, Gage, Finn, Jax, Rye and Thomas. There will be a Public Viewing at Jones & Jones~Betts Funeral Home on Tuesday, December 30, 2008, from 2 to 6 p.m. Funeral Services, open to friends, family, employees, growers and associates, will be held Wednesday, December 31, 2008, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church. A Private Family Internment at Stemilt Hill Cemetery will be held following the services. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Wenatchee Convention Center on March 18, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Thomas K.
