He was born March 6, 1930, at Burchard, Neb., the son of Virgil and Alice Builta Gartner. He had lived in the northeast Kansas area nearly all his life. He spent his growing-up years at Oneida, where he attended school. He started working at an early age because of the death of his mother when he was two. Ray worked at the Mid American Dairyman Plant in Sabetha for many years before retiring. He had worked for NEKCAP of Hiawatha for more than five years as a custodian. Mr. Gartner was a member of the United Methodist Church in Oneida. In recent years, he attended the Powhattan United Methodist Church. He was a former member of BPOE No. 1741, Hiawatha Elks Lodge. He married Sue Chandler on April 9, 1950, at Oneida. She died in November 1983. He married Ruby Phyllis Kinsley on Sept. 21, 1984, at Hiawatha. They had made their home in the Powhattan-Hiawatha communities for the past 18 years. She survives of the home. Other survivors include three daughters, Cindy DuBois, Vassar, Janice Lowe, Hiawatha, and Tammy Bauerle, Wakarusa; four sons, Steve Gartner, Marysville, Dan Gartner, Hanover, Terry Gartner, Topeka, and Chris Gartner, Highland; two stepdaughters, Janelle Amon, Topeka, and Jenalee Brown , Powhattan; two stepsons, Joel Hobbs, Iowa, and John Hobbs, Cashion, Okla; 20 grandchildren; and three great- grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his parents; a son, Kent Gartner in August 1970; and two brothers, Otis Gartner and John Gartner. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha. Rev. Dave Manning, of Morrill, will officiate. Interment will follow at Oneida Cemetery in Nemaha County. Friends may call at the funeral home after 10 a.m. today, where the family will meet with friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Northeast Kansas Multi county Hospice and sent in care of the funeral home, 124 S. 7th St., Hiawatha, 66434.
