Courtney, 90, Guthrie Center, son of Marquis and Verna (Edwards) Courtney, was born January 26, 1918 in Guthrie County, Iowa. He died April 1, 2008 at his son's home in rural Guthrie Center. He attended Victory No. 9 school for eight years and then graduated from Guthrie Center High School in 1935. Ray married Betty Webber May 13, 1939. He farmed and milked cows until 1974. After his dad died in 1948, Ray and his family moved into his birth home with his mother. He lived in the home that his father and mother built all the rest of his life. Ray married Pearl (Benton) Howland December 26, 1972. His pastimes were playing cards, getting together with family and going to his grandchildren's ball games. He was preceded in death by his parents and first wife Betty. Surviving are his children, Bill of Des Moines, Jane (Roy) Goodlaxson of Altoona, and Mark (Karen) of Guthrie Center; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; step-children Judy (Jim) Tholen of California, Vickie (Roger) Richter of Adair, and Donnell (Benny) Jones from Alameda, CA; five step-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were April 5, 2008 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Guthrie Center. Burial was in Union Cemetery, Guthrie Center. Guthrie Center Times, Guthrie Center, Iowa, April 11, 2008
