Read More	Ray (Reinhold) Kaufman was born on March 31, 1896, in Moundridge,Kansas; son of John P. and Carolina (Schrag) Kaufman; dairy farmer. Ray married Emma Schrag on April 3, 1921. Emma was born January 21, 1904, in Moundridge, Kansas. Emma is the daughter of Peter J. and Mary (Goering) Schrag; housewife. Children: Hazel, Vilas, Velora, Betty, Dorothy and Clayton. Ray was born in a sod house which had only ground for the floor. Everyone slept on mattresses filled with corn husks' and under feather down covers. To keep warm in the cold winters they burned corn cobs, cow chips and hedge wood. While attending Bethel College, Ray played on the football team and enjoyed singing baritone in the College Quartette and glee club. He and his wife Emma made their first home near Moundridge, Kansas. After a few years they moved to Lane County in Western Kansas. Here they experienced the historical blizzard of 1931, where livestock froze to death in the -25 degree weather. A school bus stalled in Colorado and all the children and the driver froze to death. About this time the "Famous Dust Bowl" of western Kansas began, causing many people to leave the area to survive. Ray and Emma with their small children returned in order to avoid getting dust pneumonia. They purchased a farm near Windom, Kansas, driving 35 miles to their home church, having a perfect attendance record one year. Since church and high school were so far away they relocated near Newton, Kansas, eventually retiring in Newton. Ray and Emma enjoyed many activities after retiring. They loved working in the garden and in the flowers, and would often go to their farm pond to fish, they soon found a hobby of restoring old and antique trunks . Ray and Emma worked together Ray fixing, repairing, and renewing the body of the trunk while Emma became skilled at lining the inside with beautiful paper and velvets. All the children and grandchildren plus many friends became recipients of these beautifully restored trunks. Ray and Emma were privileged to celebrate the 65th wedding anniversary and praise God for his leading through valley and mountaintop experiences.
