Description	:	Raymond C. "Ray" Gardner , 86 years of age, of Atchison, Kansas died Friday, June 19, 2009 at the Hickory Pointe Care Center, Oskaloosa, KS. Ray was born on April 20, 1923 in Clifton, KS the son of Guy and Lena (Bouley) Gardner. He attended rural Clifton grade schools and graduated from Clifton Rural High School before entering the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II as a hospital Apprentice Dental Technician and Pharmacist Mate. "Ray" Gardner , 86 years of age, of Atchison, Kansas died Friday, June 19, 2009 at the Hickory Pointe Care Center, Oskaloosa, KS. Ray was born on April 20, 1923 in Clifton, KS the son of Guy and Lena (Bouley) Gardner. He attended rural Clifton grade schools and graduated from Clifton Rural High School before entering the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II as a hospital Apprentice Dental Technician and Pharmacist Mate. He was united in marriage to Dorothy Coash at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Clifton, KS, on Dec. 31st, 1946. Ray and Dorothy celebrated over 62 years of married life. They resided in Beatrice, NE for three years working at Dempster Mill Manufacturing Company before Ray entered Kansas State University in Manhattan, KS. and later the Kansas City College of Mortuary Science, Kansas City, KS. He became a licensed funeral director and embalmer in both Kansas and Missouri. They moved to Atchison where Ray was associated with the Harouff-Buis Funeral Home. They moved to Belleville, KS where he was associated with the Tibbetts Brothers Funeral Home and Furniture Store. In 1971 he returned to Atchison and entered into a partnership owning and operating the Stanton Mortuary in Atchison, KS, retiring from the Becker Dyer Stanton Funeral Home in 2004. He received state honors for over Fifty years of service in the funeral profession. During this time he served on the Kansas Funeral Directors Association Board of Directors where he held all the offices of District 1. Ray was a member of St. Joseph Church and later Sacred Heart Church where he served as Lector, usher, and Eucharistic Minister. He held memberships in the Knights of Columbus for over 60 years serving in numerous offices of the 3rd and 4th degrees which included Grand Knight, Faithful Navigator, District Deputy and Comptroller. Ray and his family received the distinguished award as Kansas Knights of Columbus Family of the Year in 1999. Later that year they were selected as the Knights of Columbus International Family of the Year at the Knights of Columbus International Convention in Minneapolis, MN. He has served as a Board of Director of HUD, Red Cross Chairman and held offices in the Kiwanis Club, organizing the Kiwanis Flea Market for several years. He was a faithful blood donor. His volunteer work included the Road to Recovery Program for a number of years. He was a member and Past Commander of the Fleming-Jackson-Seever American Legion Post # 6, Atchison, KS. He was active in the Democratic Party and served as a precinct Committee Chairman for several years. He was a member of the Pineview Country Club, and enjoyed golf, and other club activities. He enjoyed playing card games and Dominos with his family, friends and several organizations. He and his wife's travels included England, Hawaii and several trips to Mexico. Survivors include his wife Dorothy, of Atchison, KS, six sons; Dr. Patrick (Lois Jean) Gardner, Kennewick, Washington, CMSgt. Ret. Gregory (Betty Jo) Gardner, Lenexa, KS, Rev. Daniel Gardner, Kansas City, KS, Dennis (Patricia) Gardner, Atchison, KS, Kevin (Terri Ann) Gardner, Lansing, KS, and Rex (Jeanne) Gardner, Lawrence, KS, a daughter; Lisa (Randy) Carney, Irving, TX, a sister; Maxine Branfort, Clifton, KS, thirteen grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Doran Gardner, two sisters; Mary Rowland, and Ada Mae Gardner, two step sisters; Lavonne Ricciardone and Juneita Berry and one granddaughter; Alexa Dawn, infant daughter of Gregory and Betty Jo Gardner.
