Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. on Monday, July 11, 2016, at St. Benedicts Church. Burial will follow in the Mt. Calvary cemetery. Dorothy was born on March 30, 1925, in Clifton, Kansas, the daughter of Russell and Hazel (Scouten) Coash. She graduated from Clifton High School. She was married to Raymond C. Gardner on Dec. 31, 1946, at St. Marys Church, in Clifton. They resided in Beatrice, Nebraska, Manhattan, Kansas, Kansas City, Kansas, Atchison, Bellevue, Kansas. They were married for more than 62 years and the couple raised seven children. Eventually settling in Atchison, Dorothy worked several years as a County Assessor and assisted with the St. Joseph school food program. She served seven years as the bookstore manager of Mount St. Scholastica and Benedictine College. Dorothy and Raymond later became active partners in the Stanton Mortuary. Dorothy was an active member in her parish and community. She held membership and several officer positions in the Altar Society, Daughter of Isabella, Zonta International, Atchison Hospital Auxiliary, Heartland Share Food Program and the Womens Golf Association at Pineview Country Club. In addition to devotion to her family, she enjoyed interests in Cub Scouts, golf tournaments, traveling, sewing and crocheting and playing in bridge clubs. In 1999, the Gardners were selected as the Knights of Columbus International Family of the Year and the Kansas Knights of Columbus Family of the Year. Survivors include: six sons, Dr. Patrick (Lois Jean) Gardner, CM Sgt. Retired Gregory (Betty Jo) Gardner, Rev. Daniel Gardner, Dennis ( Patricia) Gardner, Kevin (Terri-Ann) Lansing, Rex (Jeanne) Gardner; a daughter, Lisa (Randy) Carney; 13 grandchildren, 14 great- grandchildren; three brothers, a sister, three sisters-in-law, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by: her husband, her parents, three brothers, and one granddaughter. As published in the St. Joseph News-Press.
