Description	:	Raymond Carl Swanson was born September 10, 1904 in a rural home east of Essex, in Tarkio Township, Page county, Iowa. He was the second of seven children born to Walfred August and Martha Christian Anderson Swanson. At the age of two he moved with his parents to a six room home on a 200 acre farm in Fremont Township, in Page County, Iowa. His son Merrill and his wife Etta live on this farm today. Read More	Raymond Carl Swanson was born September 10, 1904 in a rural home east of Essex, in Tarkio Township, Page county, Iowa. He was the second of seven children born to Walfred August and Martha Christian Anderson Swanson. At the age of two he moved with his parents to a six room home on a 200 acre farm in Fremont Township, in Page County, Iowa. His son Merrill and his wife Etta live on this farm today. Raymond lived on this farm through his childhood and the first years of his married life. He attended Rapp country school and spoke the Swedish language when he began school. He was baptized at the Fremont Lutheran Church, confirmed at the Fremont Covenant Church, and attended the Covenant Church in Essex for many years. On December 15, 1926, Raymond was united in marriage with Inex Elva Wedell of Red Oak, Iowa. They first lived on the farm in Fremont Township, later moving to a farm in Pierce Township, four miles north of Shenandoah. After the death of his wife in 1982, he moved into Essex, where he lived until failing health forced him to enter the Stanton Care Center in June of 1992. Raymond spent all of his working life farming and was interest in promoting soil conservation. After his retirement he continued to help his son with his farming. Preceding him in death were his parents, six brothers and sisters, Arvid Swanson, Elvin Swanson, Irene Townsend, Dail Clifford Swanson, Leonard Swanson, and Wayne Swanson, and his wife Inez. He is survived by one son, Merrill Swanson and his wife Etta of rural Essex; one daughter, Mavis and husband, Darrell Herzberg of rural Villisca; five grandchildren, Diane and husband Bill Shipley of Nodaway, Iowa, Chris Herzberg and wife Sarah of Overland Park, Kansas; Steven Herzberg of Overland Park, Kansas; Kevin Swanson of Essex, Nancy and husband Darrell Wilson of Quincy, Illinois; five great grandchildren; Blake and Logan Wilson of Quincy, Illinois, Kyle, Alyssa, and Trever Shipley of Nodaway, Iowa, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
