Description	:	Raymond Everett Binns, 79, of Oskaloosa, died Saturday, November 9, 2002, at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. He was born on February 22, 1923, at Olivet, Iowa, the son of Shirley T. and Alice Blakeley Binns. He grew up on a farm near Tracy, Iowa, and attended country schools in the area. Read More	Raymond Everett Binns, 79, of Oskaloosa, died Saturday, November 9, 2002, at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. He was born on February 22, 1923, at Olivet, Iowa, the son of Shirley T. and Alice Blakeley Binns. He grew up on a farm near Tracy, Iowa, and attended country schools in the area. He graduated from the Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1940. Early in his adult life, Raymond loved to bowl, and he was the pitcher for his softball team. On July 28, 1943, Ray was married to Juanita Sloan in the Central United Methodist Church parsonage in Oskaloosa. Raymond worked for Lynn's Hatchery in Oskaloosa, then moved to Ottumwa and worked for John Morrell & Co. for a couple of years. He then moved back to Oskaloosa, and went to work for Carl Hensel's Trucking as a bookkeeper. He then formed a partnership with Morgan Kisor, called Kisor-Binns Explosives. In 1956, he formed Binns and Stevens Explosives with Roy Stevens. They also started a distribution center in Union, Missouri, which he visited monthly throughout his career. In 1992, Ray retired from the business. Raymond's lifelong passion was fishing, and he enjoyed sharing that passion with his family by taking them on family fishing trips to Leech Lake in Minnesota. In retirement he enjoyed many fishing trips with the guys, to Canada. He was a 50 year member of the Tri-Luminar Lodge #18, AF&AM of which he had served as Master for 2 terms and was currently the treasurer of the lodge; also, he was very active in the KAABA Shrine of Davenport; American Legion Post 34; Oskaloosa Elks # 340; very active member of the Central United Methodist Church in Oskaloosa which he enjoyed the many committees he served on, and he ushered in the church for over 50 years; and he was a 50 year member of the Knights of Pythias. He enjoyed playing pinochle, especially teaching his family to play so he could beat them. He is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Juanita Binns of Oskaloosa; a son: Phillip Ray Binns and his wife Karen Binns of Oskaloosa; a daughter: Phyllis Elayne Fox and her husband Jay Fox of Oskaloosa; 5 grandchildren: Sarah and Shannon Binns, Jeff Fox, Jodi VanSickle, and Jill Dursky; 5 great grandchildren: Haley and Megan Dursky, David Fox, and Ethan and Hannah VanSickle; 3 step grandchildren: Scott Botten, Laura Botten, and Kimberly Johnson; 2 step great grandchildren: Madisyn Botten and Halie Johnson; and many friends. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother: Wilbur Binns; and a sister: Blanche Johnson. Funeral services for Raymond Binns will be held Thursday, November 14, 2002, at 11 a.m. in the Central United Methodist Church in Oskaloosa with the Reverend Robert Dean officiating. Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. Visitation will begin after 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Bates Funeral Chapel, and there will be a Masonic service at 6:00 Wednesday evening, and the family will be at the funeral chapel following the Masonic service until 8:30 p.m. Wednesday to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to KAABA Shrine. Casket bearers for the service will be: Sarah and Shannon Binns, Jeff and Shari Fox, Jodi and Scott Van Sickle, Jill and Mike Dursky.
