He was born March 14, 1927, in Rossville, to Fred and Mary Schober, and attended schools in Centralia. He owned and operated Surber's Service since 1955 and Dutch's Place since 1965, both in Vermillion. He was a field engineer for Associated Engineers from 1980 to 1994. He served with the Navy on a minesweeper in the Pacific during World War II. Schober, 71, Vermillion, died Saturday, Feb. 20, 1999, at a hospital in Onaga. He was born March 14, 1927, in Rossville, to Fred and Mary Schober, and attended schools in Centralia. He owned and operated Surber's Service since 1955 and Dutch's Place since 1965, both in Vermillion. He was a field engineer for Associated Engineers from 1980 to 1994. He served with the Navy on a minesweeper in the Pacific during World War II. He was a member of the Christian Church and Starr-Dreher-Piercy Post No. 257 of the American Legion, both in Vermillion, and Frankfort Post No. 1359 of Veterans of Foreign Wars in Frankfort. He had served on the Vermillion City Council. He married Daisy Willard on Dec. 24, 1950, in Westmoreland. She survives. Other survivors include sons, Fred Schober, Topeka, Steve Schober, Newton, Iowa, and Brad Schober, Centralia; a brother, Eldon Minger, Topeka; sisters, Joye McCullough, Topeka, and Catherine Jacobs, Garland, Texas; and nine grandchildren. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Christian Church in Vermillion. Burial will be in Vermillion Cemetery. Mr. Schober will lie in state from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Padden Funeral Home in Frankfort. Memorial contributions may be made to the Christian Church in Vermillion or to community Home Health in Onaga.
