Mrs. Ray Schmidt was the organist. The congregation sang "Rock of Ages" and the choir sang "Nearer My God to Thee." Raymond George Kruse of Schleswig, son of Wilhelm Kruse and Edna nee Evers, was born August 12, 1911 in Denison Township, Crawford County, Iowa. He was both baptized and confirmed by Rev. William Frese at Zion Lutheran Church, Denison. He was married to Irma Stier on June 8, 1941, by Pastor E. Schwidder in Immanuel Lutheran Church, Schleswig. He served in the Army of the United States during World War II from 1942-1945 as a medic in Company C. 327 Medical Battalion in the Rhineland and Central European Theatre of operations. After his return to civilian life in 1945, he was employed by the C.L. Lee Feed Company from 1946-1970. Since then he had been working for the Schleswig Transfer. He held membership in the local American Legion Post #645 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post Number 3930. He entered the Crawford County Memorial Hospital on Wednesday, December 26, 1973 and died there on December 30. He is survived by his wife Irma, one son Merlyn and his wife Barbara of Somerset, Wisconsin, one daughter Peggy, wife of Dennis Laughlin of Sac City, and two grandchildren, one brother Jack of Clinton, Oklahoma and one sister, Esther, wife of Ferd Brensel of Denison. He was preceded in death by three brothers. He attained to 62 years, 4 months and 18 days. Military honors were by the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
