His memorial service will be held Monday, October 4, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. at Bridgeport Memorial Chapel with Pastor Jonathan Seng officiating. Inurnment will follow at Oregon Trail Memorial Cemetery. Cremation was held at Sunset Memorial Park Crematory. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be given to the Bridgeport Volunteer Rescue Unit. Joe was born on March 28, 1929 in Stuart, Nebraska to Rudolph and Alice (Cadwallader) Jackson. Joe was the fifth of eight children. His family moved to Gordon where he attended school, and then to Chadron when he was a teenager. He married Ruth Elaine Strong on October 1, 1948 in Chadron. They moved to Bridgeport, Nebraska in 1970. Joe spent time employed on ranches in Montana and Wyoming. He worked construction for several years building roads in Wyoming, South Dakota, and Nebraska. He also drove logging trucks in Wyoming and Montana, and hauled beer from Milwaukee, Wisconsin to Nebraska. In 1970, Joe followed his two brothers lead, and moved his family to Grand Coulee, Washington where he worked on the Grand Coulee Dam, and from there the family moved to Lebanon, Oregon before returning to Nebraska where Joe was employed by Bridgeport Equipment Company from 1971 to 1984. Joe hauled tractors, combines, disks, whatever International and Massey Ferguson built, Joe delivered it. He enjoyed hauling across the United States and into Canada. His work took him to Seattle, Washington where he drove his truck onto a ferry to reach the new owner of the equipment, and to every state in the Western United States, including from Texas to North Dakota., from Minnesota and Ohio to Tennessee and South Carolina. He met many people through those years, some remained in contact with him for years. He picked up hitchhikers and broken down motorists. Joe received Christmas cards every year from friends in Washington where he delivered machinery, and he received cards for several years sent by a young man from England who was hitching across America to see the country, and Joe gave him a lift. Joe knew which café's were the best, and which truck stops gave green stamps and had the best showers. In 1985, he purchased his own truck and stayed closer to home, hauling cattle and grain for area farmers and ranchers. Joe continued driving until his was 78 years old. As a young man, Joe loved to sing and dance. His children remember him serenading them with some of his favorite songs from Patsy Cline and Roger Williams. He enjoyed old movies, especially Westerns. Joe loved to see his 14 grandchildren, many of them grew up spending a lot of time at grandma and grandpa's house.Survivors include children Ted Jackson of Bridgeport, Becky (Stan) Goltl of Bridgeport, Mary Jackson of Scottsbluff, Dan Jackson( Sheila Hoke) of Fort Collins, and Bill (Melanie) Jackson, and grandchildren, Pat (Claudia) Goltl, Andrea (Chris) Stull, Beth (Adam) Reed, Mariah (Alfredo) Dominquez, Andy (Bethany) Jackson, Gunnar (Katie) Jackson, Josh (Kristy) Krauter, Nick (Mary) Krauter, Katie (James Opfer) Krauter, Will (Krystine Hoefer) Jackson, Austin Jackson, Dylan Jackson, Jakob Jackson, Addison Jackson, and 13 great grandchildren, and Joe's sisters Hazel (Babe)Hall and Leota (Odey) Ray. Joe was preceded in death by his parents Rudy and Alice, his wife Ruth, infant son Thomas, daughter-in-law Donna, and brothers Fred and Dutch, and sisters Margaret, Leona(Onie), and Maxine.
