They were 81-year-old Raymond and 75-year-old Margaret Choyeski and 84-year-old Raymond and 76-year-old Anita Scheef. Nance County Attorney John Morgan said the couples were southbound on a road that links with Highway 22 just north and east of Genoa around 6 p.m. Margaret Choyeski, the driver, failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection there, he said. The car was driven into a pasture and struck a tree, killing all four people instantly. The Choyeskis were wearing seat belts. An autopsy was conducted Tuesday in Lincoln to determine whether Choyeski suffered a medical problem that caused the wreck. Results were not available Tuesday night. Residents in the small community said they were shocked by Monday's accident. St. Edward, a town of 800 people, has lost six residents within the last eight days. "That's the sad part," said St. Edward resident JoAnn Roberts, a friend of both couples. "Everyone knows everyone here. We're all just shocked." Roberts said the couples were on their way to Columbus, where they were to celebrate Raymond Scheef's birthday and play bingo. "They did that a lot," Roberts said. "They liked to play bingo." The Choyeskis, who were members of St. Edward's Catholic Church, were known for their generosity, often giving rides or running errands for those who couldn't make it out of their homes. "They were very helpful," said Sister Agatha of St. Edward's Catholic Church. "And they were always helpful with church activities. "This has been a terrific shock to the community," she added. Roberts said both Raymond Choyeski and Raymond Scheef had recent health problems, but she was unaware of any health problems Margaret Choyeski might have had.
