Services will be 10:30 a.m. today at Faith Lutheran Church in Maskell, with the Rev. Randy Rasmussen officiating. Burial will be in Limecreek Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the Norfolk National Guard Color Guard and assisted by the Newcastle American Legion Post 62. Arrangements are under the direction of Mohr Funeral Home in Ponca, Neb. Raymond was born July 5, 1914, in rural Newcastle, to Oscar Melvin and Rose Marie (Birkley) Nelson. He attended rural school in Grand Ridge, Neb. He then farmed on the family farm in rural Maskell. He served with the 5th Armored Division of the U.S. Army from March 1942 to October 1945. While in the service, he was a radio operator and spent a lot of time in Germany. After the service, he farmed and moved into Maskell in September 1979. He later moved to Newcastle, Neb., then to the Elms Health Care Center in Ponca. He moved to Hillcrest Care Center in Laurel in 2007. He was a member of Newcastle American Legion Post 62 for more than 50 years. He was the treasurer of the Zion/Faith Lutheran church for 40 years and served on the Hooker Township board for 40 years. He served in the Newcastle Rural Fire Board. He received the Nebraska Aksarben 100 Year Nebraska Pioneer Farm Award in 1972. He was a cemetery caretaker for many years. He loved to have coffee with his friends. Survivors include a sister, a brother, a sister-in-law, five nieces and nephews, and several grandnieces, grandnephews, great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, LeRoy Nelson; a brother-in-law, Norman Hangman Sr.; two sisters-in-law, Helen Nelson and Betty Nelson; a niece, Christy Nelson; and a nephew, Darrel Wickstrom.
