Description	:	Ray Vander Lugt, 78, of Sioux Center died Monday morning, May 5, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, after suffering a massive stroke on April 23. Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 7, at 10:30 am at Lebanon Christian Reformed Church of Lebanon, Iowa, with Rev. Charles Louvau officiating. Burial followed in Lebanon Cemetery. Ray Vander Lugt, son of Gerrit and Bertha (Kooi) Vander Lugt, was bom December 15, 1924. He graduated from the eighth grade at Garfield #8 in Sioux County. Ray married Esther Hooyer on August 17, 1949, in Sioux Center. They lived and farmed together for 49 years west of Lebanon, Iowa, on the same farm where Ray was born. They retired from the dairy business in 1998 and moved to Sioux Center. Ray enjoyed his last visit to the farm a week before his stroke. Ray was a devout Christian and a member of the Lebanon Christian Reformed Church where he served as a deacon and as an elder. His family respected and trusted his wisdom and counsel. Throughout the years, Ray served on various boards, including Lebanon Christian School, Western Christian High School, and Co-op Gas and Oil of Sioux Center. In retirement Ray enjoyed spending time with his wife and family, reading, playing cards, and challenging his family to games of pool. He was always interested in news, as well as historical events, and never stopped being intrigued by changes in both technology and medicine. Ray was quietly proud of his family. He is survived by his wife, Esther, and his children: Kathy and Jack Schreurs (Sheldon), Kenneth (Sioux Center), Vernon and Bev (Kitteridge, CO), Glenn and Vicki (Hawarden), Gail and Tom Dacken (Sheldon), Ryan (Sioux Center) and Jane and Jeff Kaptein (Mt. Vernon, WA). Grandpa Vander Lugt was loved by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Leah and Todd Zuidema (Lindsey and Emily); Micah and Shannon Schreurs (Caleb and Joya); John and Jessica Schreurs; Joel and Jill Schreurs; Ian, Graham, and Mason Vander Lugt; Keaven Kane, Anna Kane, and Macie Dacken; and Elise and Molli Kaptein. Other family members who will miss him are his step-grandchildren: Diane, Amy, and Jocelyn King and their families; and Triston and Truman Dacken. Survivors include his sisters, brother, and their spouses: Margaret Vander Stoep of Sheldon; Grace and Severt Haverhals, and Lois and Tony Hooyer, all of Sioux Center; and Allen and Annetta Vander Lugt, and Dorothy Bennett of Grand Rapids. Other survivors include many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Raymond Vander Lugt was preceded in death by his father in 1968 and his mother in 2002. An infant brother, William, died at birth in 1935.
