He died Wednesday, September 05, 2001, at the Mobridge Regional Hospital. Raymond Samuel Spiry was born December 01, 1919, to Samuel Spiry and Bertha Schlepp in Java. He grew up in Java and attended school there. On March 09, 1942, he entered the United States Army in Kansas. He served in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and in Central Europe. He was decorated with EAME Campaign Medal, five Bronze Stars, a Purple Heart for an injury in the Battle of the Bulge, and American Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal and a World War II Victory Medal. He was married November 25, 1945, at Java, Walworth County, South Dakota, to Elenora Julia Horst. They purchased a farm south of Glenham. They lived on the farm until 1952, when they moved to Raymond, Minnesota. He worked for an egg and feed producer and also worked construction. They then moved to Clara City, Minnesota, where he worked as a police officer, a night watchman and for the school system as a bus driver and a janitor for many years. They made their home in Minnesota for 32 years. In 1985, they bought her father's home in Glenham. He had resided there since. He was a member of St. Jacobi Lutheran Church in Glenham and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1639 in Wilmar, Minnesota. He loved to watch the Minnesota Twins and was also an avid fisherman. He also enjoyed gardening. Survivors include two sons, David Spiry and Joel Spiry, both of Glenham; one daughter, Linda (Loren) Weers of Aberdeen; two brothers, Herb Bauman of Willmar, and Clarence Bauman of Mission Viejo, California; three grandsons; and one great granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and one brother.
