He died at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison on Friday, September 11, 1998 at the age of 87 years. Schmidt (1910 - 1998) Raymond H. Schmidt was born on November 26, 1910 on a farm in Otter Creek Township Crawford County, Iowa, the son of George and Clara Petersen Schmidt. He died at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison on Friday, September 11, 1998 at the age of 87 years. Ray was baptized at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison on March 5, 1911 and later confirmed there in 1923. His education began in a rural school near his home and later graduated from the eighth grade from Zion Lutheran School in Denison. After finishing his education, he began working for Fred Brodersen Electric and Appliance Store in Denison, and then went to work for his father on the family farm in Otter Creek Township. On August 17, 1932 Ray was united in marriage to Garnet Else. The couple settled in Schleswig where Ray drove the Skelly Tank Wagon. Ray later joined the United States Army and served his country in Okinawa during World War II; he then returned to Schleswig and in 1947 started Modern Appliance with his father-in-law Julius Else and later added hardware items. In 1978 Ray and Garnet retired but he enjoyed his hobby of making and refurbishing duck decoys; spending wonderful days fishing and working around their cabin at Lake View. Ray also loved collecting antiques and was an active member of the Crawford County Historical Society; the Schleswig Business Men's Club, the Collectors Club, the V.F.W. and the American Legion in Schleswig and a longtime member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. He was a very loving and caring man who loved to celebrate Christmas with his family. Ray was preceded in death by his parents, one sister Irene in infancy, his beloved wife Garnet who died August 25, 1992. Survivors include two sisters: Edna Mae and Viola Schmidt of Denison; one brother, Vernie Schmidt and his wife Helen of Cody, Wyoming; many nieces, nephews other relatives and many friends. Funeral services were held 2 P.M., Monday, September 14, 1998 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa with Rev. Merle Mahnken officiating the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Marlene Hight served as organist with the congregation singing: "How Great Thou Art," "Just as I Am, without One Plea" and "Onward, Christian Soldiers." Honorary pallbearers were: Leonard Hollander, Michael J. Goodin, Allen Stoneking, Donald Meyer, Robert Skarin, Arlen Meseck and Chris Sands with the American Legion and V.F.W. Post 3930 of Schleswig, serving as pallbearers and providing military honors for the services. Following grave side rites, a luncheon was served at the church by the Immanuel Ladies Aid for those attending the services. The Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig was in charge of the arrangements.
