Description	:	Raymond T. Magness died Monday, April 16 at Hand County Memorial Hospital at the age of 82. Raymond T. Magness was born November 11, 1896 at Ute, IA the son of Absolom and Ellen Magness, the 11th chid of a family of 12. He received his education in Iowa. At the age of 16 he came to St. Lawrence and worked for his brothers, Ben and Jim at which time he learned the auction and Livestock business, later joining his brothers in the business. When World War I broke out he joined the National Guard and was called into servie... Read More	Raymond T. Magness died Monday, April 16 at Hand County Memorial Hospital at the age of 82. Raymond T. Magness was born November 11, 1896 at Ute, IA the son of Absolom and Ellen Magness, the 11th chid of a family of 12. He received his education in Iowa. At the age of 16 he came to St. Lawrence and worked for his brothers, Ben and Jim at which time he learned the auction and Livestock business, later joining his brothers in the business. When World War I broke out he joined the National Guard and was called into servie in May, 1917 and spent 21 months in foreign duty, fighting on all the major fronts. He was wounded at Verdon and returned with a casualty outfit and discharged in April, 1919. He joined his brothers, Ben and Jim in the livestock business and as an auctioneer. He married May McCarthy on September 9, 1919 in St. Lawrence. One daughter was born to this union and they adopted a girl who died in 1938. They lived all their married lives in St. Lawrence and Miller, except for 10 years in Salem where they ran a general store and in Laurens, IA where he ran a sale barn. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, past trustee, a Mason, having taken the Shrine in Sioux Falls, a 50 year member of the Legion and also the VFW and was a member of the 40 & 8. In later years he had been active in the WWI Blue Grass Barracks. He is survived by his wife, May; one daughter, Patsy Howard, Denver; two granddaughters, Deborah Howard, Denver and Cynthia Howard, Salt Lake City; one sister, Grace Embree, Portland, OR; several nieces and nephews. He as preceded in death by his adopted daughter, Maxine, his parents, six brothers and four sisters. Funeral services were held at the First Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, April 18 with the Rev. James Smucker officiating. Burial was in the GAR Cemetery. Pallbearers were all nephews, Garlan McCarthy, Sioux Falls; Jeral McCarthy, Adrian, MN; Bradley Magness, Huron; Joh Clegg, Sioux Falls; Paul Redhead, Rapid City and Gary Kulm,Pierre.
