Description	:	Frankfort, Kansas, Index Thursday, April 9, 1970 Raymond Yeager Schafer, eldest son of Franklin D. and Maud (Grable) Schafer, was born July 13, 1906 near Vermillion, Kansas and died at Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka, Kansas on April 1, 1970 at the age of 63 years, 8 months and 19 days. At the age of 12 he became a member of the Christian Church which he served faithfully as a teacher and deacon until the time of his death. He attended the Vermillion schools and graduated with the class of 1924. On May 3, 1928, he was joined in marriage to Lula Rachel Ballard. To this union was born two daughters, Vivian Akin Winifred, Kansas and Miriam Long, Topeka, Kansas. They made their home in Vermillion where he was a farmer and stockman. In Vermillion he was active in school and community affairs and served on the school board. In 1956 they moved to Topeka, Kansas where they established their home. At the time of his death, he was employed by the State Highway Commission where he had worked several years. He was preceded in death by his parents, and one granddaughter, Jeanne Ann Akin. He was survived by his wife Lula, two daughters; a sister, Mrs. Gladys Simmons Vermillion, Kansas; two brothers, Harold Schafer and John Schafer, Topeka, Kansas, and seven grandchildren, in which he took great pride, Danny, Janell, Joan, and Bruce Akin, Douglas, Brenden and Gregory Long, other relatives and many friends. Burial was in the Vermillion Cemetery, Vermillion, Kansas. Casket bearers were nephews, John D. Schafer, Franklin F. Schafer, and Michael Simmons, Bill Akin, and Vernon Long.
