Cooper Funeral Home is assisting the family. Mrs. Smith was born on March 31, 1918, in Latta, SC, the daughter of the late John Calhoun Hayes and Rebecca Fore Hayes. She was an alumna of Coker College where she graduated cum laude with a B.A. in mathematics in 1939, and later, she returned to Coker College to earn a master’s degree. She was a wartime bride following her beloved soldier-husband along the East Coast. She taught in Florida, Virginia, and South Carolina before she retired from Latta Schools in 1979. She was a member of Latta United Methodist Church, Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Huguenot Society, as well as a charter member of the Pineland Grange. Mrs. Smith lived most of her life on her family’s Cotton Press Farm, her place of birth, which is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. She loved and maintained the home place with the distinct purpose of providing a family gathering place for holidays as well as a haven for all her extended family. She wanted her home to be a safe, harmonious place where people could come in peace. She loved sharing its unique history and architectural elements with them. She loved all of God’s creation, often awaking early most mornings to walk over her farm and listen to the sounds of nature. She was an excellent steward of the land and felt a deep connection to it. Mrs. Smith also enjoyed spending time with her family. She adored her children and her four grandchildren who were sources of great joy and pride. She was their loyal supporter and unequivocal advocate who never wavered in her constant, unconditional love for them. She exemplified contentment and a happiness that sprang from a genuine love of life and love for people. Her sense of humor and abundant kindness were evident to all who were fortunate enough to have been in her presence. She left her footprints in the hearts of those who knew her. Mrs. Smith was the essence of the gracious Southern lady who accentuated the positives and refused to allow negativity to dampen her spirit. She had a great sense of history and of her place in it. She was a friend to all, and because she enjoyed company, her home was always open. She welcomed family, friends, and former students, who were the benefactors of her excellent tutelage in mathematics as well as the immeasurable life lessons she taught by her words and deeds. A born teacher, Mrs. Smith was dedicated to her profession and committed to her students. She maintained life-long, sincere relationships with many of them. Mrs. Smith embraced life and warmly welcomed people into her inner circle. She sought the similarities instead of looking for differences in the people she met. She extended thoughtful kindness and generosity to all. She had a keen wit, a sharp mind, and an awesome business acumen that she kept until the very end of her life. She never lost her sense of humor, her appreciation for life, or her expressions of love for all those around her. Her life was guided by higher principles, and she was the model of what goodness, gratitude, and love can accomplish in the lives of others. Mrs. Smith made a difference in the world. She was the epitome of the best that mankind has to offer. Hers was a life well-lived. In addition to her parents and eight siblings, Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 58 years, Walter Powell Smith, Sr. and her loving son Walter Powell Smith, Jr. Mrs. Smith is survived by her son Dr. John Hayes Smith and his wife Janie of Surfside Beach, SC; her daughter Rebecca Eloise Smith Gaddy and her husband Richard of Latta, SC; and four grandchildren: Richard Quentin Gaddy, John Smith Gaddy, Rebecca Hayes Gaddy, and Janie Hayes Smith.
