THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Iowa, Thursday, August 19, 1897, page 4, columns 3-4. "ATKINSON – Rebecca Atkinson, widow of the late Rev. Isaac Atkinson, was born in Highland Co., O., April 10, 1810, and died at the home of her son-in-law, Thomas Hay, in Jasper Co., Ia., Aug. 1, 1897, aged 87 years, 3 months and 21 days. Rebecca Fisher was married to Isaac Atkinson, March 31, 1831, in her home in Ohio, where they lived until 1848 when they removed to Illinois, remained there for ten years, coming to Iowa in 1858. They made their home for nearly thirty years in the southern part of Story Co., but for some years past in Jasper Co. She was converted at the age of twenty-two, and united with the M. E. church, where her husband was licensed to preach the gospel. They united with the Wesleyan Methodist church in 1848, and remained members of the same until called from the church militant to the church triumphant. Father Atkinson was known as the blind preacher, having entirely lost his sight some twenty-two years before he died, and although thus afflicted, he did not cease his efforts to save men from sin, but in company with his devoted wife, he went from place to place, holding meetings in private houses, in school houses and churches, as God opened the way and gave him hearers. He went to his reward seven years ago. To them were born six children, three boys and three girls, two of whom are still living, Mrs. Thomas Hoy, of Jasper Co., Ia., and Eli Atkinson, of Boxelder, Neb.; also eighteen grandchildren, and forty great-grandchildren. The funeral was held at the Wesleyan Methodist church, two miles west of Baxter, conducted by the writer, in the presence of a large company of relatives and friends. The remains were laid to rest in the Bethel cemetery beside her husband, to awake the first resurrection. Text Job 14:10. May God grant that the entire family be ready and waiting for His call. Amen.
