Rebecca Jean was the oldest daughter of Ivan and Hattie (Schreckenghaust) Branaman. She was born Nov. 29, 1921. The family lived at Smithwick, S.D., where Jean attended school through the ninth grade. She then went to high school in Oelrichs, graduating in 1940. She then went to Black Hills Teachers College for one year before beginning teaching in rural schools in Fall River County. She then taught in Hot Springs and Lead. Rebecca Jean was the oldest daughter of Ivan and Hattie (Schreckenghaust) Branaman. She was born Nov. 29, 1921. The family lived at Smithwick, S.D., where Jean attended school through the ninth grade. She then went to high school in Oelrichs, graduating in 1940. She then went to Black Hills Teachers College for one year before beginning teaching in rural schools in Fall River County. She then taught in Hot Springs and Lead. During those years, she attended summer school in Spearfish. Jean and Harold Sipila were married Sept. 1, 1950. After his death in 1952, she returned to teaching, this time in Rapid City. During these years, she went to summer school and took extension classes, completing the requirements for a Master's Degree in 1969. She continued teaching in Rapid City until her retirement in 1987, the last 31 years at E.B. Bergquist School. After retirement, she had the opportunity for activities she hadn't had time to do before. She belonged to First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, the Readers and Watcher group, Alpha Delta Kappa Society, A.A.R.P. and Black Hills Retired Teachers. She served as an officer in each of these organizations. She is survived by two sisters, Shirley Kershner of Gillette, Wyo., and Hattie Lou Duncan of Oro Valley, Ariz. She is preceded in death by her husband, parents, brother and sister. Visitation will be from noon to 7 p.m. Monday, April 23, at Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City. Services will be held at noon Tuesday, April 24, 2001, at First United Methodist Church in Rapid City, with the Rev. Steve Foss officiating. Burial will follow at Pine Slope Cemetery in Belle Fourche. Kirk Funeral Home of Rapid City is in charge of arrangements.
