The last of Oregon county's old land marks has passed away. In the death of Mrs. Rebecca Couch, Jan. 18, 1905, there went out one of the most useful lives this county has known. Mrs. Couch died at the home of her son, G. W. Couch, at the ripe age of 86 years, 10 months and 23 days. She was born on the Meremac River March 5, 1818, when Missouri was a territory. In 1824 she moved to this county (at that time known as Wayne Coounty), and settled near Thomasville, known as the "Rich Woods". She was married to Simpson Couch in the year 1836. (Note: records show the marriage was 12/27/1841) Born of this union there were 10 children, six boys and four girls. Three of the children preceded the mother to the world from which no traveler returns. Those living are: Judge A. P. Couch, a prominent lawyer of this county; G. W. Couch, ex-sheriff of this county; Lindley Couch, a prominent farmer living in near Little Rock, Ark.; Mrs. Tony Hultsey of Oklahoma; B. F. Couch, for years the postmaster at Garfield; Mrs. P. J. Mooney and S. P. Couch a prominent citizen of Koshkonong. Her husband, Simpson Couch, was one of the county judges of this county for a number of years. At the beginning of the Civil War he was considered the wealthiest man of this county, but like many others who espoused the cause of the Confederacy, his fortune was swept away. Grandma Couch, as she was familiarly called, at the time of her death had eighty-one grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She was a devoted Christian, having been an honored member of the Baptist church for sixty years. It was said of her that no hungry person was ever turned away from her door. Love more enduring than marble is the heritage she leaves to those who knew her. No sculptor may carve her likeness on cold and pulseless stone but devotion and honor will be monuments in the hearts of those that will stand till eternity. (ROOTWEB)
