Description	:	Rebekah had four sons in the War Between the States and often they deserted to come home and help plant or harvest crops.Rebekah was a Unionist and so were most of her neighbors. Rebekah was suspected of harboring and feeding deserters and so General Duke under the order of Brigadier General Echols visited her at her home one day. Rebekah was suspected of harboring and feeding deserters and so General Duke under the order of Brigadier General Echols visited her at her home one day. They took her honey, destroyed her bee hives and threatened to burn her house. They arrested her and started to Floyd with her. She reminded them the deserters were in the woods and might kill him if he took her to jail. He decided not to take her! During the war two sons died of disease, her husband died, her mother died and a very young son died. On April 5, 1865,the War came to Rebekah in the form of General George Stoneman, who had been advised the war was over by his commander. He came with a Brigade of Cavalry on horseback. They took three horses from the plow, twenty bushels of oats and 100 bushels of corn, some of which was shelled. That night she had to buy corn from a neighbor to bake bread for her family. In 1877, after applying to the Federal government for reimbursement of $562.50, she received only $342.50.
