Regina "Gina" Chilson was called by the Lord after bringing a lifetime of joy as a wife, mother, grandmother, sister and daughter. After several days surrounded by family and friends, Gina passed away in the early morning of Aug. 7, 2021 from cancer. Gina was born June 5, 1953, to Patricia (Bestgen) and Thomas McDermott in Sturgis, S.D. The oldest of ten children, Gina's early years were filled with warmth and happy chaos. She loved being "second in command" to her mom, and from the beginning served as an anchor for the family. She even briefly ran a restaurant with her siblings, where she only ever fired one sister. After graduating in 1971 from Brown High School in Sturgis, Gina attended Presentation College in Aberdeen, S.D. Gina discovered a way to combine her passion for working with kids and love of language by pursuing a career in speech therapy. She spent her early 20s working her way toward a Bachelor's degree in communication and speech pathology. She began her career at Children's Care Hospital and School in Sioux Falls, and went on to work at several schools across northeast South Dakota, helping students for more than three decades. One day while studying for her degree at a library, Gina was approached by a young man with a smile and the pick-up line, "I see you're studying biology." That man went on to become the love of her life. Gina married Jim Chilson on June 6, 1980. They moved to a farm outside Florence in 1982 where they raised their children - Annie, Megan, and Josh. Gina loved being a mom, and was truly great at it. She read them books. She braved icy roads to attend their basketball games. She instilled the wry humor that became the sinew of family communication. She created a home of joy. Later in her life, she was happy to discover that the only thing she loved better than being a mom was being a grandmother - and was dubbed "Gigi" by her adoring grandchildren. Gina enjoyed spending time with loved ones and the blessings of being part of a big family, and often traveled to spend time with her parents, sisters and brothers and their children and grandchildren. She also loved reading and dabbled with writing. Being a daughter of a carpenter, Gina had a passion for house design and remodeling; she could hardly drive by an old house without revamping it in her mind's eye. Gina is survived her husband and children; father (Thomas); nine siblings (Kate, Marcy, Marijo, Jessie, Lisa, Colette, Mark, Tom, Amy); five grandchildren (Penelope, Charlotte, David, Stuart, Logan); and a bounty of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother (Patricia).
