Sterling, only son of State Bank Commissioner and Mrs. Warren F. Sterling, died at Johns Hopkins hospital in Baltimore Monday afternoon shortly after five o'clock. On Wednesday of last week he had been operated on and one kidney removed, and for some hours it seemed that he would pull through, but from Saturday until his death on Monday afternoon it was seen that there was very little chance for his recovery. Born in Crisfield on August 1st, 1905, he was just past thirty years of age. He attended the elementary and high schools here, and graduated from the Crisfield High School in the Class of 1922. In the Fall and Winter of 1922-23 he attended the Mercersburg Academy, at Mercersburg, Penna., and in the Fall of 1923 he entered the University of Pennsylvania at Philadelphia, from which college he graduated in the Spring of 1927. He was a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity and a thirty-second degree Mason. About six years ago, as the result of a heavy cold and a generally rundown condition, he suffered an attack of tuberculosis, and was confined to his home, but after some months of treatment he recovered, and was able to take part in the social affairs of his set, and engaged in the insurance business in partnership with H. Parker Tull, Jr. Some months ago, however, his health again became poor, and he has been confined to his home here until about ten days ago, when on the advice of specialists he entered Johns Hopkins hospital in Baltimore for observation and examination. X-Ray pictures and thorough examinations led the specialists to conclude that an operation for the removal of an infected kidney was the only chance Reginald had of regaining his health, and they recommended that the operation be immediately performed. Using a new treatment that in effect paralyzes that part of the body upon which the operation is to be performed, as it was impossible to use ether or chloroform, last Wednesday the kidney was removed, and everything that the finest medical and surgical skill could devise was used to keep Reginald alive and help him recover. In spite of these ministrations he succumbed on Monday. Funeral Director S. Gordon Lawson went to Baltimore for the body early on Tuesday, where it had been prepared for burial in one of the Baltimore funeral homes, and arrived in Crisfield Tuesday afternoon. Literally hundreds of friends of both Reginald and his parents have called at the home to tender their condolences and take a last look at their friend, since his body was brought home Tuesday. With the chancel filled and the altar surrounded with floral pieces sent by scores of relatives and friends, funeral services were held in Asbury M. E. church, of which he was a member, Thursday afternoon, with the pastor, Rev. J. T. Rowlenson, assisted by Dr. J. Yancey Fincher, pastor of the First Baptist church, officiating. Chesapeake Lodge No. 147, A. F. & A. M., to which Reginald belonged, sent nearly a hundred members to attend the funeral, and the officers of the Lodge had charge of the ceremonies at the grave. The Bank of Crisfield, of which Reginald's father was President for many years, closed its doors at half-past two Thursday afternoon in honor of the dead, and to show the respect and esteem of its officers for the parents. The pall bearers, all of whom are thirty-second degree Masons, were: John T. Handy, J. Millard Tawes, Egbert L. Quinn, Mark W. Sterling, C. W. Howeth, J. Edwin Tawes, R. Brice Whittington and Grover S. Somers. Interment was made in the family plot in Asbury cemetery. The son of fine parents, Reginald, as a boy and as a man, endeared himself to everyone who knew him by his genial manner and cheerful disposition, and his companions and acquaintances of his own age held him in the highest esteem as an example of clean, fun loving young American manhood. Thoughtful and considerate of his elders, courteous and kind upon all occasions, his personality impressed itself upon people so that they always were glad when he was with them, and his death is a matter of keen regret to the community as a whole. The "Times" extends the deepest sympathy to Mr. and Mrs. Sterling for the loss of their only child, and feels that it voices the sentiment of the whole community when it does this.
