Rowell Aug. 19, 1921 — March 23, 2010 Reginald Lewis Rowell, 88, of Crossville, passed away March 23, 2010. Funeral services were held March 26 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with the Rev. Jeff Streszoff officiating. Burial was in Grassy Cove Methodist Cemetery, in Crossville. Mr. Rowell was born Aug. 19, 1921, in Derby, VT, the son of Lewis W. and Dorothy Jane (Mansfield) Rowell. He served in the Army and was a veteran of World War II. He married Virginia Wilson Kemmer on Dec. 25, 1944, in Grassy Cove. After living in Vermont for the first five years of marriage, Reginald and Virginia moved to Tennessee and opened the Rowell Motel in 1951. After a few years in the motel business, Reginald planted his first apple tree in 1966. Apple farming proved to be the way of life for the Rowells. In 1968, Rowell's Orchard opened to the public. In the years that followed, Reginald and his son Reggie worked in the apple orchard and opened a new Rowell's Apple House in 1983. Since that time, Reginald, Virginia and Reggie have continued to work in the apple business with Reginald playing a vital role until his health declined in January 2010. He was an active member of Grassy Cove Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife, Virginia Wilson (Kemmer) Rowell of Crossville; son and daughter-in-law, Reggie and Thela Rowell of Crossville; granddaughters, Trudi Roberts and husband John Roberts of Knoxville, and Traci Rowell of Crossville; great-grandchildren, Reginald "Lane" Roberts and Brooke Ann Roberts of Knoxville; and sisters, Jean Noble of Washington, D.C. and Sula Rowe of Arizona. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Judy Ann (Rowell) Asher. Reginald will be deeply missed by his family. He was a loving and devoted husband for 65 years, and an outstanding father, father-in-law, grandfather and great-grandfather. Pallbearers were Jim Kemmer, Danny Kemmer, Scott Lansford, Hank Kemmer, Pitt Kemmer, Jon Paul Pennington, Jimmy Kemmer, Jim Kemmer Jr. and Mike Phillips. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Grassy Cove Methodist Church Building Fund. The family wants to express their gratitude to all that have offered prayers, support and words of kindness during this difficult time. Bilbrey Funeral Home, Inc.
