Description	:	Virginia K. Rowell Virginia Kemmer Rowell, 92, of Crossville, passed away May 18, 2010. Mrs. Rowell was born May 19, 1917, in Grassy Cove, the daughter of James Andrew and Nannie (Wilson) Kemmer. She graduated from Carson-Newman College with a degree in education. She married Reginald Lewis Rowell on Dec. 25, 1944, in Grassy Cove. After living in Vermont for the first five years of marriage, Virginia and Reginald moved to Tennessee and opened the Rowell Motel in 1951. She married Reginald Lewis Rowell on Dec. 25, 1944, in Grassy Cove. After living in Vermont for the first five years of marriage, Virginia and Reginald moved to Tennessee and opened the Rowell Motel in 1951. After a few years in the motel business, the couple planted their first apple tree in 1966. Apple farming proved to be a way of life for the Rowells. In 1968, Rowell's Orchard opened to the public. Throughout the duration of the Rowell Motel business and opening of the Applehouse, Mrs. Rowell taught with the Cumberland County School System for over 40 years. In 1983, a new Rowell's Applehouse opened. Since that time, Virginia and Reginald continued to work in the apple business full time with their son, Reggie. She was an active member of Grassy Cove United Methodist Church. Virginia will be deeply missed not only by her family, but by countless others she came to know throughout her many years teaching in Cumberland County. She was loved and adored to the many who knew her as the "apple lady." She was a very strong woman who took pride in her family. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was also very proud of the apple business that she and Reginald began. Reggie and his family will continue to carry on the traditions and way of life that Virginia and Reginald started. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Reggie and Thela Rowell of Crossville; granddaughters, Trudi Roberts and husband John of Knoxville and Traci Rowell of Crossville; great-grandchildren, Brooke Ann Roberts and Reginald "Lane" Roberts of Knoxville; and brother and sister-in-law, George and Emily Kemmer of Grassy Cove. She was most recently preceded in death by her husband, Reginald Lewis Rowell, who passed away March 23, 2010. They were married for 65 years. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Judy Ann Rowell Asher; parents, James Andrew and Nannie (Wilson) Kemmer; sisters, Mildred Scott, Sue Ann Lansford and Jane Hale; and brothers, T.J. Kemmer, Bill Kemmer, Dave Kemmer and Junior Kemmer. Pallbearers were Jim Kemmer, Danny Kemmer, Scott Lansford, Hank Kemmer, Pitt Kemmer, Jon Paul Pennington, Jimmy Kemmer and Jim Kemmer Jr. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Grassy Cove Methodist Church building fund or cemetery fund.
