Zylstra was born on May 13, 1867, in Drachten, Province of Friesland, The Netherlands. He died on November 20 at the age of 74. When he was 18 years old, that is, in the year 1885, he accompanied his father, mother, two brothers and 4 sisters to America. The family immediately settled in Signal township, and there and in Platte township, except for a season's work in Iowa during the middle [18]90s, he constantly made his home. In 1897 he married Miss Jebbigje Bultsma. Five children, two of whom died in infancy, were born. The daughter and two sons, Mrs. Ryan Dyk and Rinck Zylstra, both of Platte, and Dr. Henry Zylstra, of Grand Rapids, Mich., are here with the mother. Three sisters and a brother passed on before; two sisters and a brother remain. They are Mrs. Peter Nieveen of Corsica, Mrs. Cornelius Pranger of Platte, and Sip Zylstra but recently of this community. Mr. Zylstra did not mistake the means of life for the end. His work was a pleasure to him and he went about the cares of the farm modestly and joyously. He likes the mixed nationalities of his community and enjoyed the privilege of citizenship in it. Meagerly schooled, he was well educated. He had early gained a competence in the use of English, and could express himself with taste and discrimination in two languages. His best endeavors went into Christian service. In the busy years when the local church and school were built he glad served on committees and boards. During the ministries of Reverends Heynen, Brett, and Ehlers, he served often as an elder in the church, and as secretary to the consistory. Contributor: Rena (49813966)
