Contributor: Jeanette Johnson (48278241) Suggested edit: Obituary published in Manchester Press on Thursday, May 3rd, 1951 Reinhardt Carl Hilliger, son of Carl and Louise Gertz Hilliger, was born Feb. 7, 1855 at Hamburg, Germany. At the age of 19 he came to this country, living first in New York and then in Chicago. On Jan. 8, 1880 he was united in marriage with Christina Sandhagen at Strawberry Point, Iowa. They farmed near Dundee and later near Manchester. From 1913 to 1918 they lived in Manchester and then in Oelwein. Throughout his life Mr. Hilliger enjoyed good health and was able to be up and about and of an exceptionally clear mind, even though handicapped by loss and sight and hearing. Earlier this spring he suffered a slight attack and began to fail noticeably. On April 19, 1951 at 2:45 p.m. he finally received the summons from on high for which he had been waiting so long. He was baptised and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in Germany and continued in active membership at Dundee, where he donated the land for the church and helped it and serving on the church council. He had been a member in Oelwein sin 1918. He was privileged to celebrate his golden wedding anniversary in 1930 and since the passing of his wife in 1936 enjoyed the loving care of his children, especially his daughter, Ida. His wife and one daughter, Clara, wife of Pastor A. H. [Zerhnger], preceded him in death. Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Louise Glass, Manchester, Mrs. Ida Hinrichs, Oelwein, Mrs. Minnie Roscoe, Bristol, Vermont, two sons, Julius E. of Dundee and Erwin of Oelwein, one brother, Emil of Long Beach California, thirteen great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at Zion Lutheran church, Oelwein, on April 2[8], 1951 with the Rev. [illegible] E. Dieter officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill cemetery at Dundee.
