McKinstry, 97, who married Lyndon and Lady Bird Johnson in 1931, eight years before becoming Episcopal bishop of Delaware, died of cancer Christmas Day at the Methodist Country House in Wilmington. He served as bishop of Delaware from 1939 until 1954, when he resigned because of what turned out to be a temporary bout of ill health. "He was always an optimist; thinking about others, staying ahead of everything," said James T. McKinstry, the bishop's older son. "He remained active until about two weeks before his death."Bishop McKinstry was born in Greeley, Kan., and decided by the age of 10 that he had a call to the ministry. He graduated from Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, in 1918, and from Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, Mass., in 1920, with a bachelor's degree in sacred theology. He was ordained a priest in 1920, the same year he married Isabelle Van Dorn. He became a canon at Grace Cathedral in Topeka and chaplain of Bethany College. In 1921, he went to the Church of Incarnation in Cleveland, where he worked until 1924, when he became an officer of the National Council of the Episcopal Church. In 1927, he was appointed rector of St. Paul's Church in Albany, N.Y., and chaplain to the New York State legislature. It was in Albany that he became a friend of Franklin D. Roosevelt, who was then governor. In 1931, he went to St. Mark's Church in San Antonio, Texas, where he met another future president, Lyndon B. Johnson. As the bishop later told the story, the postmaster in San Antonio persuaded him to officiate at the wedding of Johnson and Lady Bird Taylor, even though it had to be performed on short notice because Johnson had to get back to Washington. The wedding was further complicated by the fact that the future president forgot to bring a ring. A member of the wedding party obtained one from a Sears store near the church, and the wedding went ahead. "I hope this marriage lasts," Mr. McKinstry remarked to the postmaster after the ceremony. After seven years in San Antonio, he became rector of Christ Church in Nashville. After a brief stay he was chosen in November 1938 to succeed the late Bishop Philip Cook as head of the Diocese of Delaware. During his tenure, Bishop McKinstry almost doubled the number of clergy in the diocese and oversaw the construction of numerous schools and churches. He retired in 1954 after numerous bouts of ill health. After recovering his health, Bishop McKinstry kept a generally low profile.
