Charles L Leonard, 67, a prominent member of the Troy conference of the Methodist Episcopal church, for 10 years principle of Troy Conference academy at Poultney, Vt., and for eight years pastor of a methodist church at Pittsfield, died yesterday at Brooklyn, N.Y. Rev Mr Leonard was admitted to the ministry of the Methodist Episcopal church in 1893, and in that and the following year served the churches of Bridport and Shoreham, Vt. In 1895 he was at Ripton, Vt.; 1896 to 1898, Poultney, Vt.; 1899 and 1900 at Cambridge, N.Y., and 1901 to 1908 at Pittsfield. From Pittsfield he was transferred in 1909 to Saratoga Springs, N.Y., where he served for two years. He then served for a year as president of the board of trustees of Troy Conference academy, and as of principal of the academy from 1912 to 1922. In 1923 he returned to the active ministry, serving until 1926 as pastor of First Methodist Episcopal church at Cohoes, N.Y. The next three years he served at First Plain and Freys Bush, and was then forced to retire on account of failing health. [published Friday, June 19, 1931, Springfield Republican] The Rev. Charles L. Leonard, D. D., former pastor of the First Methodist Episcopal church of Saratoga Springs and prominent Troy conference clergyman, died yesterday afternoon at the Brooklyn Methodist hospital at the age of 67, following an operation which he underwent two weeks ago. Dr. Leonard, a native of Rock City Falls, had been stationed at Fort Plain and Feura Bush since 1926. In addition to his pastorate in this city he had held several other charges in the Troy conference, including those at Cohoes and Pittsfield, Mass.Dr. Leonard was born at Rock City Falls, April 10, 1864. He was the son of the late Rev. Jacob Leonard, who served many years in the Methodist ministry and who died in Albany, and the late Hannah Catherine Sutton Leonard, who died in Green Island in 1911. As a boy Charles Leonard served in the Merchant Marine and the U. S. Navy. When his career on the sea terminated he opened a laundry on the Pacific coast. In his early twenties he answered the call to the ministry. He prepared for his profession at Troy Conference academy at Poultney, Vt. He was graduated in three years from Middlebury college at Middlebury, Vt, where he received the degree of bachelor of arts in 1894, at the age of 30. The Rev. Dr. Leonard received the degree of doctor of divinity from Union Theological seminary. Y.; 1901-1908, Pittsfield, Mass.; 1909-1910, Saratoga Springs; 1911, president of board of trustees of Troy Conference academy; 1923-1925, pastor of First Methodist church, Cohoes; 1926-J.930, Fort Plain and Feura Bush. He was regarded as a remarkable preacher and administrator. While he was preaching at Saratoga Springs, one of the principal charges in the conference. Rev. Dr. Leonard was called upon by a group of prominent men to raise money to rebuild buildings of the Troy Conference academy. His efforts were successful and he also accomplished remarkable work in the educational field. Dr. Leonard soon afterwards became principal of the academy. His wife, formerly Emma Dorsey, who survives, was educated at Middlebury college at the time her husband was there. He was a member of Delta Upsilon fraternity and was a Blue Lodge Mason and a Royal Arch Mason at Poultney, Vt. Besides his wife, survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Robert Aldrich, of Rutland, Vt, and Mrs. Frederick Jones, of Castleton, Vt; two sons, Charles Leonard Jr., of Rutland. Vt., and Walter S. Leonard, of Monroe, N. Y.; three sisters, Miss Lucy Leonard, Miss Anna Leonard and Mrs. Walter E. Sutton, all of Albany, and four grandchildren. The body left New York last night for Fort Plain, where it will rest at the Methodist parsonage until tomorrow morning. The principal funeral service will be held in the First Methodist church, Cohoes, his former charge, at 3 o'clock tomorrow afternoon, with the pastor, the Rev. Philip L. Frick, officiating. The body will be sent to Castleton, Vt, where the Masonic service will be conducted Saturday morning. Burial will be in Castleton cemetery.
