Jacob Leonard, Who was a Methodist preacher in Albany half a century ago, and was well known and endeared to many of the city's old residents, died at his home on Second street yesterday in his eighty-fifth year. He had been somewhat of an invalid for the past ten years and owing to failing health was confined to the house most of the winter. His illness did not assume a critical phase until last Monday. The immediate cause of death was erysipelas, which struck to the brain. Although possessed of a wonderfully vigorous constitution his age was against him and he had never recovered from a severe attack of pneumonia contracted in Albany some ten years ago. Deceased was born in Easton, Mass., June 16, 1803. His father was a sturdy yeoman, and the young lad received a common school education, acquiring the remainder of his rich store of knowledge by his own superior powers of application which soon developed, and brought out his sturdy qualities. At the time he was converted he had been working as a lad in a nail factory. Rev. Mr. Leonard was married twice, first, in 1826 to Miss Lucy Cook by whom he had two children, one of whom is the wife of Dr. Steenberg of Green Island. His second wife was Hannah Sutton, by whom he had six children, five of whom with their mother, survive. His first appointment was on the old Whitehall circuit in 1826 as a traveling preacher for the M. E. Church. He entered conference in New York in 1827. His first charge was at Bakersfield, Vt. The deceased was at two periods an Albany pastor. He came to Albany the first time in 1837 and for two years filled a pastorate very successfully in the old State street, now the Trinity M. E. church. The "meeting house" was the Law school building on State street. He went from here to Granville. In 1851 he returned to Albany to accept the pastorate of the old Arbor Hill, now the Grace M. E. church. His last appointment from the conference was to Guilderland, in 1869. He was then placed on the list of superannuated clergymen, and thereafter engaged in the insurance business in this city up to within the last six years. During most of that period his elder son, Jacob H. Leonard, has also been actively identified with the business. One sister, Mrs. Joseph Lord, the last of the family, survives him. The funeral will occur Monday at 1.30 P. M. from the Grace M. E. church. Interment will be in Waterford Rural Cemetery.
