Read More	Oakland - Rev. Edith L. Morton, 87, of Oakland, stepped into heaven on Monday., May 1, 2000. She was born Oct. 24, 1912, in Jefferson City, Tenn., the daughter of the late Rev. John H. Lord and the Rev. Annie Inman Lord. When she was a young girl, her family moved from Tennessee to Maine, where her parents established five Pentecostal churches in the state. The largest of these was founded in Oakland in 1926 and became known as Calvary Church of God. In 1944, after the passing of her parents, Edith became pastor of this church and served the Lord faithfully in that capacity until 1992, at which time she retired. During those years, she and her late husband, Rev. William Morton, were influential members of the Christian community throughout New England with Edith pioneering the way for women in the pastoral ministry position within her denomination. Rev. Edith Morton was a sought after speaker for church conventions baccalaureates, revival meetings and Bible schools. In 1974, under her direction, a 500-seat sanctuary, office wing, and Christian Education facility was constructed on upper High Street in Oakland. This ministry, now known as Mountaintop Christian Fellowship, continues to preach the Gospel message of Jesus Christ, reach out to the needs of the community and send preachers and missionaries to the nations. Rev. Edith Morton was valedictorian of her high school senior class and an honorary graduate of Zion Bible Institute in Providence, R. I. She served several years as chaplain for the house of Representatives of the state of Maine. In 1971, the Oakland Area Business Association honored her as "Woman of the Year". Morton, Rev.
