Father Herman Joseph Meis, pastor of S t Joseph's church, died at his residence this morning at half past seven o'clock. His death had been expected at any moment during the past week as he has been sick for several months with dropsy and other complaints and has been growing gradually weaker and weaker. The news of his death is received with universal regret in a community where he has been so many years. Only last week the silver anniversary of his pastorate of the church was celebrated by his fellow priests and his parishioners. Hermann Joseph Meis was born in Germany, at Sittinghausen Westphalia, on November 15, 1835 and received his early education in the schools of his native place and learned his trade of tailor which he followed for many years. On September 2, 1807, he came to Dubuque, where he pursued his avocation. Shortly after this he began to study for the priesthood, attending the St. Francis Seminary, in Milwaukee. He was ordained at Dubuque September 20, 1875, and was appointed assistant to Rev. B. C. Lenchan, who was then in charge of a church at Sioux City. In his duties as assistant, Rev. Father Meis took charge of the church at Le Mars and in 1875 he became its first pastor which place he filled well and ably up to the time of his death. The funeral will be held at St. Joseph's church in this city on Thursday morning at ten o'clock, seventy priests have been invited to attend the services at which a solemn requiem high mass will be celebrated. Very Rev. B. C. Lenehan, of Boon, has been invited to preach the funeral sermon in view of the fact that Rev. H. J. Meis did his first work in the service of Christ and the church under his direction. Those who will assist at the solemn requiem services are: Rev. F. H. Schulte of Remsen; Rev. B. Schulte of Templeton; Rev J. Schulte, of Arcadia; Rev. W. Pape, of New Vienna; Rev. W. F. Pape, of Pocahontas, all cousins of the deceased priest. Four brothers of the deceased are living; Ignatius Meis, who is sexton of St. Joseph's church; M. Meis, of Petersburg, Nebraska; Conrad Meis of New Vienna; and Mr. Meis, who resides three miles west of LeMars.
