Meis Came Here in the Early Eighties Death came suddenly and without warning to F. W. Meis, a pioneer citizen of Plymouth county, and a resident of Le Mars for the past fifteen years. Mr. Meis was working in the garden at his home; 36 Fifth Avenue SE, at an early hour Tuesday morning and concluding his labors went down in the basement of the house. A few minutes later groans attracted attention and the aged man was found dying. He had suffered a stroke and death was due to cerebral hemorrhage. Was Remarkably Healthy Mr. Meis was upwards of eighty years of age and was a man of remarkable vitality, possessed a rugged constitution and had never known a day's sickness in his long life. Frederick William Meis was born at Sidding-Hausen, Westphalia, Germany, June 14, 1845, and received his schooling and education in his native place and learned the carpenter trade. With his parents he came to America in 1865. They were among the early settlers at New Vienna, Iowa. Mr. Meis subsequently worked at the carpenter trade in Dubuque and was married June 4 1867, to Angeline Tauke. Following their marriage they farmed near New Vienna for several years. Came to L e Mars In 1881 Mr. Meis and his family came to Le Mars and settled on a farm in America township where they lived until retiring to Le Mars in 1909. Mr. Meis was a successful farmer, being industrious and foresighted and was ably assisted by his family. Mr. and Mrs. Meis were the parents of 15 children, nine of who died young. Mr. Meis is survived by his wife, four sons, and two daughters, who are Anton Meis, Henry Meis, Herman J. Meis, and Joseph I. Meis, Mrs. H. B. Kemp and Mrs. Frank Nuebel, all residing near Le Mars. There are 35 grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. He also leaves a brother, Meinholph Meis, of Elgin, Neb. Mr. Meis was a brother of Father Herman J. Meis, the first priest of St. Joseph church, who died in 1900. Mr. and Mrs. Meis were married fifty-seven years ago this month and seven years ago celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. Funeral Held Thursday The funeral services were held yesterday at St. Joseph church and were largely attended by old friends and neighbors. Mr. Meis was a familiar figure on the streets of Le Mars, coming down town daily. He was a most likeable man and had scores of friends and was highly esteemed in the community where he had lived for more than forty years.
