The son of the late Joseph and Margaret (Cole) Shonebarger, he was born August 23, 1936 in Columbus, Ohio. Father Shonebarger attended St. Mary Grade School and High School in Lancaster. He entered Gethsemani Abbey in 1962, taking the religious name Brother Anthony, earning a philosophy degree at Gethsemani Abbey in 1966. Read More	Reverend Father John Thomas Shonebarger COLUMBUS: Reverend Father John Thomas Shonebarger, 75, of Columbus, died January 6, 2012 at Mohun Health Care Center. The son of the late Joseph and Margaret (Cole) Shonebarger, he was born August 23, 1936 in Columbus, Ohio. Father Shonebarger attended St. Mary Grade School and High School in Lancaster. He entered Gethsemani Abbey in 1962, taking the religious name Brother Anthony, earning a philosophy degree at Gethsemani Abbey in 1966. He then left the Abbey to enter the seminary for the Diocese of Columbus, earning a Masters of Divinity degree from Mount St. Mary of the West Seminary, Norwood, Ohio, while also earning a Bachelor of Arts degree from Xavier University, Cincinnati, both in 1970. He was ordained to the Priesthood on August 23, 1969 by the Most Reverend Clarence E. Elwell. He served as Associate Pastor of St. Joseph Cathedral, Columbus, while teaching at St. Joseph Academy, Columbus (1970-72). He served as Diocesan Director of Vocations (1972-77) and co-Director of Permanent Diaconate Program (1974-77), with residence at the Pontifical College Josephinum (1972-74), St. Peter Church, Columbus (1974-75) and Christ the King Church, Columbus (1975-77). He served as pastor of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, Grove City (1977-87), Blessed Sacrament Church, Newark (1987-95), and St. Timothy Church, Columbus (1995-2006), from which he retired. He is preceded in death by his parents, sisters Helen Walker, Mary Margaret Kilbarger, Bernadine Soles, Patricia Gemperline, Agnes Carlton, and brothers Leo, Paul, Robert and Harry. He is survived by his sister, Mrs. Rita (William) Competti; sisters in law, Mrs. Mary (Leo) Shonebarger and Mrs. Mary Louise (Harry) Shonebarger; and many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Visitation will be Monday, January 9th from 4 to 8:00 p.m. and Tuesday, January 10th from 10 to 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, 132 S. High Street, Lancaster. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11 a.m. Tuesday with Bishop Frederick F. Campbell as principal celebrant, Bishop James A. Griffin as concelebrate, and Reverend F. Richard Snoke as homilist. Interment will follow at St. Mary Cemetery, Lancaster, following the funeral Mass. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Catholic Charities J.O.I.N., 578 E. Main Street, Columbus, OH 43215.
