Franklin Pierce Sanders, oldest child of Isaac and Mary (Stratton) Sanders was born near a well known crossroad called "Taylors Corners," on the State road between Wooster and Lodi, ten miles north of Wooster, Ohio, December 4, 1852, and died at his home 299 South State Street, Westerville, Ohio, at 11:30 P. M. Nov. 2, 1931, aged seventy eight years, 10 months, and 28 days. It was a plain, simple home into which this child was born, but it was a Christian Home, and the parents were Godly, devout, and the family altar set up in the beginning, was never taken down till the end, through a period of more than three score years. His schooling began in the "Red School House," the "Stratton School," on the corner, two miles west of Canaan Center (Wayne Co. OH), the School to which his father and mother had gone. Here, for the most part, he obtained a good elementary education. His secondary education was gotten in three academies -- Canaan, Lodi, and Smithville, in 1878 he graduated from the Union Biblical Seminary, Dayton, Ohio, now called Bonebrake Theological Seminary. But he was ever looking upward, and later took studies in the McCormick, Oberlin, and Allegheny Theological Seminaries. In 1891, after passing successfully the examinations in the graduate department of Otterbein University, he received the goal of a degree of Doctor of Philosophy. In Cleveland, Ohio, Feb. 8, 1876 he was married to Elma J. Gindlesberger. To them was born a son, James Glossbrenner, in Louisville, Ohio, July 17, 1880. This little boy has become a good and useful man. His office is in Philadelphia, Pa., and he travels widely in the interests of Agricultural Science. But after a little more than two years the young wife and mother passed on to the other shore. On Dec. 24, 1882, in the U. B. Church at Nova, brother Frank was married to Miss Dora Curry. Through these nearly forty nine years they have walked happily together, sharing their joys and sorrows along life's road. To them were born four sons: -- John Curry -- who after a brief stay of a couple of months, was transplanted to the heavenly land; Charles Finney, teacher, in Minneapolis; Franklin Edgar, in business in Warsaw, Ind., and Albert Marion who lives in a house beside his father. Beginning with Dec. 4, 1874, there are in his note book incidents of each birthday down to Dec. 4, 1930. In all of these there is ever-flowing gratitude to God for all his good gifts. An outstanding one on his fiftieth. This one I read to you: "Westerville, Ohio, Dec. 4, 1902 This is my fiftieth (50) birthday, -- memorable on that account. Am now one half-century old. God has been good in giving me fifty years of my life. Don't hope for fifty years more, but hope for twenty five years more. Of useful happy years. God grant it so. I arose at 4 A. M. and went to the office to acknowledge pension vouchers. Upon my arrival home for dinner good wife Dora had successfully planned a Surprise Dinner on me in memory of my 50th Anniversary, by inviting in my own dear brother Jefferson and his family, together with all the resident ministers of Westerville, as follows: Weaver, Lamber, Marshall, Riebel, Cragton, Gernetet, Stiverson, with their respective wives: also Rev. Beeman, as also Mrs. Rev. Rymer, Resler, Lesher, and Garst; altogether with own dear family, wife, and four sons -- made the day a delightful one, and long to be remembered. May God bless the remaining days of my life, making them more useful and happy. Amen," The town of Westerville, the seat of Otterbein University, with its fine moral, religious, and scholastic atmosphere, and a great attraction for him, as its had for many other, so in the year 1897, he left the city of Akron and came here. He purchased the J. B. Ressler property of five or six acres, located at the south-west corner of State and Walnut Streets (167 S. State St.), and made it his home for many years. The people of Westerville know him best as insurance agent, realtor, councilman for many years, and as a builder. Some two or three additions to the town were laid out by his hand and at least fifty houses built by him. He always stood foursquare and solidly for law, and order, and for economy and efficient in public administration. He would not compromise with evil. But the greatest work of his life and where he found his chief joy was as Minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We have spoken before of his home of piety and the religious atmosphere in which he was reared as a boy. The young heart and mind were open and susceptible to these influences. In the Note Book we find the following: "-- West Canaan, U. B. Church, near Burbank, Ohio, Feb. 22, (Washington's Birthday) 1870. This eve made a public profession ot the Christian religion by going forward to an altar of prayer. Although at the age of eight I exercised faith, hope, and love in God, frequently and almost constantly praying to Him. At the age of eleven (11) I publicly expressed a wish to lead a Christian life, but for some reason was overlooked by the Church. I have resolved since, to ever look after the children. I joined the U. B. Church at West Canaan, Feb. 28, 1870.God calls His ministers by the Holy Spirit, into this the highest and greatest of all callings -- the preaching of the Gospel of the Son of God." This boy hears the call, a clear and unmistakable call. It followed him day and night. He felt the urge, the pull, and he gladly answered the call. He set about the work of education and preparation as before stated. After his graduation from the Seminary he entered wholeheartedly and energetically upon the great work of his life preaching the Gospel, and he continued in the work uninterruptedly, for more than a quarter of a century. Some of his largest and most important parishes were in Lorain, Akron, Galion, and Logan, Ohio. Upon the resignation of Rev. L. F. John as College pastor here in 1891, to take a professorship in Lebanon Valley College, he was chosen to fill out the conference year. Some of his themes here were -- "Paul, the Model Preacher," "The Tree of Life," "Co-Workers with God," and "Citizenship in Heaven." In all his ministry he preached about 2500 Sermons; made about 4000 pastoral calls and visits, and received into the Church 450 members. Among those received by him were, March 24, 1895, Henry Hursh, Harriet Hursh, and William T. Hush parents and brother of our own Prof. Edwin M. Hursh, whome he baptized and received into the Church, Sunday March 8, 1896. He preached many funeral sermons -- among them that of the great-Souled pioneer preacher Rev. Alexander Biddle, a co-temporary of the co-temporaries at Otterbein, and who, in the early nineties placed his hands on my head and prayed God's blessing on me. The funeral of Father Biddle was on Feb. 1, 1899. In March 1895, Brother Frank, as I commonly called him, conducted an evangelistic meeting in Mifflin, Ohio, for the Sainted Rev. J. G. Baldwin -- with 50 conversions and 30 accessions. Brother Frank was a Gospel Preacher, an evangelical and evangelistic preacher. He did not shun to declare the whole Gospel -- as he saw it. He was fearless in the defense of truth and right. When he made the sacrifice of his life to step out of the active ministry -- it was that he, limited in his schooling, might give his children better educational advantages than he had. His four boys were all in college, three of them graduating. In these latter years, when he could not, without difficulty and embarrassment of himself, attend church and other public gatherings, he brought the world of good things, -- great sermons, lectures, and Hymns, into his home by the radio. For the last several years he has listened to at least three sermons on Sunday and one on each week day. Those, and the music, and the great hymns of the church, have inspired and fed his hungry soul. The things that stood out big in his life were his Home -- Wife and children -- and the Church. He was a good husband and father, and a clean up-right citizen. He fought bravely the burdens of life and was keenly conscious of the joys and pleasures. He hated Sham and Shoddy. His earth work is done: he has come to the end. We will keenly miss him. Good Bye, beloved brother, husband, father, friend: We will meet you in the morning -- the morning of the First Resurrection -- Where there will be no more pain, no more sorrow, no more Death, meet you, yes, meet you to part no more. Amen.
