George August Lohr was born September 28, 1844 in Hanover, Germany, a son of Karl and Louise Lohr. In his early infancy he was brought to the Lord in Holy Baptism. In the year of 1859 he renewed his baptismal vow through Confirmation. The urgent cry from America for faithful ministers of the Gospel was heard by him, and he resolved to give his services to the Lord. In 1868 he entered the proseminary of the sainted Rev. Brum, in Steiden Nassau. One year later he came to America entering the Concordia Seminary at St. Louis, Missouri and studied under the talented professors, Walther, Craemer and others. After passing his examinations in 1871, he received and accepted a call from the congregation at Clarinda, Iowa; there he was ordained October 8, 1871 and served there as pastor six years. He then moved to Missouri and served two congregations there. But owing to unfavorable climatic conditions, he moved back to Iowa where he served two congregations for nearly ten years. In 1893 he came to Crete and served the St. John's congregation at Kramer for 16 years. There he resigned in 1909 after serving his Lord and Master 38 years in church and school. The deceased was married twice. The first union was with Caroline Windhorst of Missouri. This union God blessed with three sons. All three preceded the father into eternity. One dying at the age of 2 years, the second at the age of 11. Paul, who was also active in the ministry, passed away in Lincoln five years ago after a lingering sickness. In 1894 also his spouse was called from his side. On October 17 of the same year he married Mrs. Augusta Niermann of St. Louis. This union was blessed with one son, August, who is a parochial school teacher stationed at Ft. Wayne Indiana. After resigning from the ministry, he lived in Kramer until he began to fail in health. A little over a year ago he moved to Crete and made his home with Fred Mundt and family. There death came not unexpectedly but suddenly Monday morning at 5 o'clock. He reached the ripe old age of 79 years and 10 days, being survived by his wife, son, two daughters-in-law, step-daughter and two grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted today at the Crete Lutheran church at 1 o'clock and at Kramer at 2:45. Burial was made in the church cemetery at Kramer where many of his old friends are waiting the sound of the trumpet. Source: The Crete News, October 11, 1923
